Episode 279: “Organize, agitate, educate, must be our war cry.” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:05:10

Welcome to the 279th episode of Our Hen House, featuring an interview with Rich Roll and Julie Platt, a review by Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman, and special appearances by Laura Gardner, Joel Capolongo, Michael Harren, and Matt Ruscigno. On today’s episode, we will tell you all about Jasmin’s upside-down weekend spent with 36 vegan runners as they divided into three teams and ran 200 miles across Cape Cod. The event went through the night — lasting just about 30 hours for Jasmin’s team — and of course Jasmin had her mic on hand. We’ll get snippets of stories from a few of Jasmin’s fellow runners and comrades, including geneticist Laura Gardner, Strong Hearts Cafe restaurant owner Joel Capolongo, musician Michael Harren, and Registered Dietician Matt Ruscigno. And, as a special addition to this week’s “Rising Anxieties” segment, Jasmin will squawk about how some of her 7,000 running peers reacted to her team’s vegan message-wear. For our feature interview today, we’ll talk to ultrarunner Rich Roll, and his partner Julie Piatt, who are the authors of the new book, The PlantPower Way. Rich and Julie will interweave their thoughts on nutrition with their deeply held worldview, and how they bridge the gap with what they eat. And for our review, our good friends Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman, the guys who make up the fabulous Vegan Mos, will be giving us their take on The PlantPower Way, including their insights on which recipes are an absolute must-try. All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.  Episode 277: “We cannot have peace among men whose hearts find delight in killing any living creature.” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:35

Welcome to the 277th episode of Our Hen House, featuring interviews with Keith Allison and Amber Canavan, plus a review by Alessandra Seiter. In today’s episode, we discuss why our vinyl record collection just became even more special; why Mariann is as busy as a bee grading (and where animal rights comes into play there); and, of course, we’ll update you on the latest and greatest from the world of “Rising Anxieties!” We have two very special feature interviews today. Both are with activists who recently found themselves in hot water thanks to their efforts to change the world for animals. You’ll hear from Keith Allison, a schoolteacher in Ohio who was removed from his job after a local dairy farmer complained about a post he put on Facebook — on his own time –that showed and explained local calf crates, and urged people to drink plant-based milk. You’ll also hear from Amber Canavan, an activist who has been indicted on felony charges for her part in an animal cruelty investigation into Hudson Valley Foie Gras. Then, for our review, we’ll be joined by Our Hen House’s Media Coordinator Alessandra Seiter (of the blog Chickpeas and Change), who will get us hungry vegans up to speed on the latest additions from one of the best vegan meat companies around: Upton’s Naturals. All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights. Welcome to the 276th episode of Our Hen House, featuring an interview with Wayne Pacelle and a review by Kirsten Bayes. Joining us today is the incredible Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, who will share his remarkable insights on the current state of animal rights, as well as offer his predictions for tomorrow.  Episode 271: “It is not knowledge we lack. What is missing is the courage to understand what we know and to draw conclusions.” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:05

Welcome to the 271st episode of Our Hen House, featuring interviews with Nora Kramer and Piper Hoffman, and a special tribute to Sam Simon by Ari Solomon. On today’s episode, we squawk about the very best vegan mac-and-cheese there is, where veganism and House of Cards intersect (and why that’s amusing), and — for our “Rising Anxieties” segment — we’ll dissect why one hilarious comedian’s attempt at confronting his own hypocrisy about meat-eating is, indeed, a reflection of his own “Rising Anxieties.” Ari Solomon will then join us for a very beautiful look inside the life of his late friend Sam Simon, an ambassador for animals and an avid animal rights activist who left us just last week. Don’t miss this inspiring story; it will surely cause anyone who cares about changing the world for animals to step up their game, and certainly inspired us to do so. (Also be sure to watch filmmaker Mikko Alanne’s short video tribute to Sam, and Fusion TV’s documentary about this amazing activist’s life — Rebel With a Cause.) For our feature interview, we’ll be joined by Nora Kramer, the founder of Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp — a camp for social justice. Nora will tell us all about that project, and will also let us in on her new role with the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition. Then, pundit Piper Hoffman will give us the skinny on Columbia Law School’s recent event — sponsored by the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Center for Biological Diversity — which took on the hefty subject of overpopulation, and what that has to do with animal agriculture. Piper will also talk with us about the new proposed U.S. Dietary Guidelines, which include sustainability and environmental considerations, and promote plant-based eating. Big Ag is trying to pressure the government into backpedaling to the bad old days of ignoring the environmental impact of eating animals. You can make your voice heard about it by submitting a comment to the government by April 8. (Please note: The correct web address for making public comments on the new proposed U.S. Dietary Guidelines that Piper Hoffman mentions in the podcast is http://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/.) Joining us today is Mark Devries, who is not only the mastermind behind the documentary Speciesism, but also recently filmed the world’s first aerial drone footage of factory farms. Mark will discuss his groundbreaking findings with us today. Then, in honor of St. Patty’s Day, the Vegan Mos’ Michael Suchman will be giving us his favorite holiday delights — and some tips for any vegetable-lover who wants to celebrate this holiday with Irish style. All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.  Episode 265: “Grab the broom of anger and drive off the beast of fear.” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:29

Welcome to the 265th episode of Our Hen House, featuring Michael Mountain, plus a review by Alessandra Seiter. On today’s episode, we will be joined by longtime animal activist Michael Mountain, who is the co-author of a new groundbreaking study of the basic psychology behind our destructive relationship to nonhuman animals. Then, Our Hen House’s Alessandra Seiter — also of the blog Chickpeas & Change — will give you a taste of her favorite vegan winter treats to eat (be sure to find these sweet treats for yourself at the links below!). All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights. Find Alessandra’s fave vegan winter sweet treats at the following links: 1.)
