Reading: 2 Samuel 8-9 Reading: 1 Chronicles 18 Reading: 2 Samuel 8-9 2 Samuel 8-9 Back to top 2 Samuel 8-9 David's Victories 8 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines. And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute. David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates. And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David and brought tribute. And the LORD gave victory to David wherever he went. And David took the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze. When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hadadezer, Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. These also King David dedicated to the LORD, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued, from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah. And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the LORD gave victory to David wherever he went. David's Officials So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people. Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder, and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was secretary, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over1 the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and David's sons were priests. David's Kindness to Mephibosheth 9 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?” Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?” Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master's grandson. And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, th

Reading: Psalm 1-2 Reading: Psalm 15 Reading: Psalm 22-24 Reading: Psalm 47 Reading: Psalm 68 Reading: Psalm 1-2 Psalm 1-2 Back to top Psalms 1-2 Book One The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked 1   Blessed is the man1     who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,   nor stands in the way of sinners,     nor sits in the seat of scoffers;   but his delight is in the law2 of the LORD,     and on his law he meditates day and night.   He is like a tree     planted by streams of water   that yields its fruit in its season,     and its leaf does not wither.   In all that he does, he prospers.   The wicked are not so,     but are like chaff that the wind drives away.   Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,     nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;   for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,     but the way of the wicked will perish. The Reign of the Lord's Anointed 2   Why do the nations rage3     and the peoples plot in vain?   The kings of the earth set themselves,     and the rulers take counsel together,     against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,   “Let us burst their bonds apart     and cast away their cords from us.”   He who sits in the heavens laughs;     the Lord holds them in derision.   Then he will speak to them in his wrath,     and terrify them in his fury, saying,   “As for me, I have set my King     on Zion, my holy hill.”   I will tell of the decree:   The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;     today I have begotten you.   Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,     and the ends of the earth your possession.   You shall break4 them with a rod of iron     and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”   Now therefore, O kings, be wise;     be warned, O rulers of the earth.   Serve the LORD with fear,     and rejoice with trembling.   Kiss the Son,     lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,     for his wrath is quickly kindled.   Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Reading: 2 Samuel 5:11-6:23 Reading: 1 Chronicles 13-16 Reading: 2 Samuel 5:11-6:23 2 Samuel 5:11-6:23 Back to top 2 Samuel 5:11-6:23 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house. And David knew that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel. And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. David Defeats the Philistines When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. And David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.1 And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away. And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the LORD has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” And David did as the LORD commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer. The Ark Brought to Jerusalem 6 David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,2 the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart,3 with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark. Uzzah and the Ark And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD, with songs4 and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah5 to this day. And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?” So David was not willing to take the ark of the LORD into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household. And it was told King David, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. And when those who bore the ark of the LORD had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn. Da

Reading: Psalm 106-107 Reading: Psalm 106-107 Psalm 106-107 Back to top Psalms 106-107 Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good 106   Praise the LORD!   Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,     for his steadfast love endures forever!   Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD,     or declare all his praise?   Blessed are they who observe justice,     who do righteousness at all times!   Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people;     help me when you save them,1   that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones,     that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,     that I may glory with your inheritance.   Both we and our fathers have sinned;     we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.   Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,     did not consider your wondrous works;   they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,     but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.   Yet he saved them for his name's sake,     that he might make known his mighty power.   He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry,     and he led them through the deep as through a desert.   So he saved them from the hand of the foe     and redeemed them from the power of the enemy.   And the waters covered their adversaries;     not one of them was left.   Then they believed his words;     they sang his praise.   But they soon forgot his works;     they did not wait for his counsel.   But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness,     and put God to the test in the desert;   he gave them what they asked,     but sent a wasting disease among them.   When men in the camp were jealous of Moses     and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD,   the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,     and covered the company of Abiram.   Fire also broke out in their company;     the flame burned up the wicked.   They made a calf in Horeb     and worshiped a metal image.   They exchanged the glory of God2     for the image of an ox that eats grass.   They forgot God, their Savior,     who had done great things in Egypt,   wondrous works in the land of Ham,     and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.   Therefore he said he would destroy them—     had not Moses, his chosen one,   stood in the breach before him,     to turn away his wrath from destroying them.   Then they despised the pleasant land,     having no faith in his promise.   They murmured in their tents,     and did not obey the voice of the LORD.   Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them     that he would make them fall in the wilderness,   and would make their offspring fall among the nations,     scattering them among the lands.   Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor,     and ate sacrifices offered to the dead;   they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds,     and a plague broke out among them.   Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,     and the plague was stayed.   And that was counted to him as righteousness     from generation to generation fore

And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” And David said to him, “How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” And the young man who told him said, “By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ And he said to me, ‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.” Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?” Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the LORD's anointed.’” David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, and he said it1 should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar.2 He said:   “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!     How the mighty have fallen!   Tell it not in Gath,     publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon,   lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,     lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.   “You mountains of Gilboa,     let there be no dew or rain upon you,     nor fields of offerings!3   For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,     the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.   “From the blood of the slain,     from the fat of the mighty,   the bow of Jonathan turned not back,     and the sword of Saul returned not empty.   “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!     In life and in death they were not divided;   they were swifter than eagles;     they were stronger than lions.   “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,     who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,     who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.   “How the mighty have fallen     in the midst of the battle!   “Jonathan lies slain on your high places.     I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;   very pleasant have you been to me;    &

Reading: 1 Samuel 28-31 Reading: Psalm 18 Reading: 1 Samuel 28-31 1 Samuel 28-31 Back to top 1 Samuel 28-31 Saul and the Medium of En-dor 28 In those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, “Understand that you and your men are to go out with me in the army.” David said to Achish, “Very well, you shall know what your servant can do.” And Achish said to David, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.” Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the necromancers out of the land. The Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a medium at En-dor.” So Saul disguised himself and put on other garments and went, he and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night. And he said, “Divine for me by a spirit and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you.” The woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. Why then are you laying a trap for my life to bring about my death?” But Saul swore to her by the LORD, “As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” He said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul.” The king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a god coming up out of the earth.” He said to her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and paid homage. Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.” And Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has turned from you and become your enemy? The LORD has done to you as he spoke by me, for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. Moreover, the LORD will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me. The LORD will give the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.” Then Saul fell at once full length on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night. And the woman came to Saul, and when she saw that he was terrified, she said to him, “Behold, your servant has obeyed you. I have taken my life in my hand and have listened to what you have said to me. Now therefore, you also obey your servant. Let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way.” He refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, urged him, and he listened to their words. So he arose from the earth and sat on the bed. Now the woman had a fattened calf in the house, and she quickly killed it, and she took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread of it, and she put it before Saul and
