For over 35 years, Vinton County, and specifically Vinton County's Airport has played host to Ohio's Largest Free Airshow; and this year is no exception! On Sunday, September 18th, beginning early in the morning and stretching throughout the entire day, the Vinton County airport becomes a busy place. Visitors from all over Ohio and surrounding states arrive to witness good old fashion barnstorming aerobatics, radio controlled flying, and parachutists as they plummet towards the ground until their falls are broken as their canopies deploy. Along with these activities, the famous chicken barbecue dinners will be available, along with other fare from the Vinton County Band Boosters and other vendors. This year, the Vinton County Pilots and Boosters Association will dedicate the airshow to Harold Johnson who for many years was one of the main supporters and participants in the airshow. There's an exciting thing happening here in Vinton County - and that is the construction of the new Lake Hope State Park Dining Lodge! The original lodge which was constructed in the 1950's burned to the ground in February, 2006, and since that time, there has been uncertainty about whether the lodge would be re-built, and if it was re-built, what features and services would it have? Thankfully, now it can be reported that a new dining lodge to replace the one lost to fire is under construction as the official ground breaking occurred on Monday, August 15, 2011. And as to what it will look like, what it will contain, and the services it will offer? We have some of those answers, too! For the past 14 years, Ohio's Lake Alma State Park has hosted the Annual Lake Alma Beach Party - and this year is no exception. On Saturday, August 6th, the beaches and campground areas will be abuzz with activities for the whole family - and best of all, there are no admission charges or fees. There is something for everyone! Activities get underway at 8:00 am and continue into the evening. Naturalists have been feeding hummingbirds at Lake Hope State Park, just north of Zaleski, OH since 1995. In 2002 a program was established which allows any visitor to try their hand at this amazing opportunity. In this episode, Bruce Knox and Brandi Betts discuss the program at Ohio's Lake Hope State Park where people "hand-feed" the ruby-throated hummingbirds. For over 50 years, there has been an event at the (Old) Vinton County High School around the time of the Fourth of July which has served two purposes. First, it has helped each of us in the community celebrate the remembrance of our nation's freedom, and secondly, in so doing, it has raised funds needed to aid in the continued operation of the Vinton County Athletic programs.
