The Shelf Podcast
Summary: This was meant to be a podcast of live gigs from The Shelf, a comedy night in Melbourne, but mostly it's Adam & Justin nattering on about who knows what. Cover illustration by James Fosdike.

It was always intended that we release some live material from The Shelf. Not the whole show, obviously, but bits and pieces here and there. This was meant to be uploaded a couple of weeks ago, but there have been computer issues. So here is a fortnight-old Olympic chat featuring Justin Hamilton, Lehmo and Adam Richard. This is from week 1 of Season 4 of The Shelf.
Recorded on the eve of The Shelf Season 4 Premiere, Olympic mania has gotten hold of us; gold mines, disappointing silver and bronzing up, plus nerd cakes.
We're at Justin's house and are joined by his flatmate, a very sleepy Rob Hunter, who tells us about meeting and working with comedy legend Louis CK, as well as lots of talk about setting his alarm at 4am to watch the London sports event that I am very confused about whether or not I can say the name of in a podcast or blog. Given that the BBC World News, Sky News and Al Jazeera show still photos when they say "here are some highlights of the games," I wonder whether we should even mention the names of the sports they play at said medal competition. Anyway, we talk sport, we talk comedy, we talk about Justin's violent disposition toward printers and Adam embarks on a marathon of watching 800 episodes of a tv show from beginning to end.
We wanted to record at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, but there was a strict 'No Recording Devices' policy, and it finished at 9pm, which is well past Adam's bed-time - look, you don't need to know all that. This starts out as an attempt to talk about The Dark Knight Rises and we talk about everything else. TDKR Spoiler Edition of The Shelf Podcast follows shortly after this one.
Adam visits Justin's house to talk about how he's finally seen Prometheus, Justin's manky finger, Adam's cough, Tania Zaetta, secrets, dalek bottle openers, skill testers, 3D sex, pirating Adam Sandler movies, bumming off on the Battle of the Planets, why male comedians are so obsessed with onanism.
Justin is back from the Comedy Festival Roadshow and visiting Adam's house, and Adam's rather gurgly dishwasher. There's a lot of talk about Prometheus, which Adam hasn't seen, so it's spoiler-free and somewhat confusing. Also, there is some discussion of young comedians and creepy old men.
Hammo is on the phone from Adelaide and having many dreams about going to see The Dark Knight Rises, while Adam is having dreams about Downton Abbey.
13. Unlucky for some. Especially Justin, who is currently touring with the Comedy Festival Roadshow and has a heinous cold. Thankfully, Tegan is still in town and caught up with Adam for an old fashioned girly natter about Kylie, Nicole, the mysterious panther of the Dandenongs, venison, birds, Justin's arse (that old chestnut), and whether hugging siblings is icky.
Shit comedians say. To other comedians. An hour (or so) of it.
Justin and Adam are kicking back at Justin's house. This is a TOFOP tribute podcast, because Adam wasn't actually recording the first time. Something about reading the instruction book.
Justin and Adam are joined by regular Shelver Tegan Higginbotham who pours a bucket of cold water all over Justin's burgeoning frenzy over the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. We also talk to Tegan about her experiences performing her first ever solo Comedy Festival, and how she is still mourning the end of Harry Potter.
The Avengers. We talk about other things, like Justin's time on the Comedy Festival Roadshow, but mostly it's about The Avengers.
Many apologies for the fact that The Shelf Podcast went on an unintended hiatus while the live show was on. Some, but not all, explanations can be found within.
Justin is back in the studio with Adam, filling his cheeks with food like a chipmunk. Serena Williams, Josh Earl, John Hamm, Kim Kardashian, David and Margaret, and how Wil Anderson could single-handedly fix all the problems at the ABC. Plus we reveal the lineup for this week's first Comedy Festival live show.
Justin's last day in Adelaide on the phone. Prometheus trailer, luncheon meat, dumbing it down, rookie date mistakes and reviewing the reviewers.
