The date you put the APC in service is less important than the date that the unit was manufactured. Here is my APC buying process. The APC serial number gives the date of mfg. Ignore the first number and letter. The next 4 digits are the year and week of manufacture. When you buy at Frys, look for the unit with the most recent date of manufacture. I try for no older than six months. The lead acid batteries don’t like to sit without being charged for more than six months or so. My batteries usually last three years from mfg. date but if the UPS sat before putting in service, it will not last as long. Also, a higher VA(watt) unit will not necessarily run a load longer than a lower VA unit. What affects the runtime is the number of batteries in the unit and the amp-hour rating of the batteries. As long as the unit is rated to handle the peak load, your runtime is dependent on the batteries.
