The Royal Academy archive is a treasure trove of fascinating stories about the artists, teachers and students who have been part of our history since the RA's foundation in 1768. Last week the Academy's archivist, Mark Pomeroy, met with RA Schools alumnus and WWII veteran Norman Attwell to discuss the time he spent here as a student. Here Attwell discusses his return to the Schools after the war. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/ra-magazine/blog/ra-schools-alumnus-norman-attwell,470,BAR.html

In a talk especially for young people who are thinking about becoming an architect, Ivan Harbour and Tracy Meller of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners discuss what attracted them to architecture and the unique opportunities a career as an architect offers. After the talk is an informal Q+A session. In support of the exhibition 'Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out'.
Characterised by planar, sculptural forms rendered in rich earthy colours incorporated into a distinctly modern architectural language, the work of Legorreta + Legorreta has received international acclaim. Victor Legorreta discusses past and current projects, including the BBVA Bancomer Headquarters currently on-site in Mexico City, designed in a fascinating collaboration with Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Warren Carter, Julia Bailey and Greg Votolato explore the various ways US artists and architects working in the 1920s and 1930s, including Frank Lloyd Wright, were inspired by Mexico's Mayan heritage, and how the advent of modernism allowed that past to be considered - and deployed - in innovative ways. In support of the exhibition 'Mexico: A Revolution in Art, 1910-1940'.
A lecture by Christopher Riopelle (National Gallery) in support of the exhibition 'George Bellows (1882-1925): Modern American Life'.
Michel Rojkind discusses the collaborative nature of his practice, Rojkind Arquitectos, with particular attention to its on-site extension to the National Film Archive in Mexico City, a uniquely fluid space blurring architecture and moving image.
Manet's most famous courtesan, Olympia, fingers a floral shawl as she gazes boldly at the viewer of the painting. Professor Therese Dolan (Temple University) illustrates how Manet skillfully employs the shawl's economic and social status to connote levels of class and power in articulating Olympia's sexual identity.
Both the French artist Edouard Manet and the American artist George Bellows saw their respective worlds through the lens of realism. The curators of 'Manet: Portraying Life' and 'George Bellows (1882-1925): Modern American Life' - MaryAnne Stevens, Ann Dumas, and Charles Brock (National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC) - probe the two artists' individual interpretations.
