Bosnia 1992: The Omarska Camp - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2779

Twenty-five years on, survivors of the Omarska concentration camp tell chilling personal stories of their incarceration and shocking treatment at the start of the Bosnian War. By 1992, the Yugoslav Federation was disintegrating. Slovenia and Croatia had already broken away, sparking a conflict with Serbia. Further violence then broke out in Bosnia-Herzegovina which had also declared independence. The Serbs there wanted to remain within Yugoslavia and build a greater Serbia - and received backing from extremists in Belgrade. Bosnian Muslims, known as Bosniaks, were driven from their homes in what soon became known as 'ethnic cleansing'. The first outbreaks were in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina in and around the municipality of Prijedor, where Bosnian Serb military and police unlawfully segregated, detained and confined several thousand of Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats. Over four thousand people were killed between May and August 1992. While Serb forces set up hundreds of concentration camps throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina, Omarska was the most notorious and where a relatively few survived.  Islamophobia in the USA - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2680

"Islamophobia in USA" is an investigation by Aljazeera Arabic correspondent Abdullah Elshamy into who and what's behind the rise of anti-Islamic feeling in the US – what they think, how they operate and where their funding comes from. The 11th September attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 was a watershed moment in America's relationship with the Arab world. Amid the grief and US military response that followed, American fear of the threat of international terrorism grew. George W Bush's so-called 'crusade' against what he labelled the 'axis of evil' fueled suspicion of the Middle East as a whole and as US military action increased and led to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, this fear turned into one of Arabs generally and Muslims in particular. With the rise of ISIL and the way the mainstream American media reports on it, fear of Islam further increased, tending to demonise Muslims and portray them and their faith as dangerous and violent. Donald Trump is a textbook fascist and we will see whether or not that translates into fascist policies. Hank Johnson, Democratic Congressman of Georgia Elshamy's investigation uncovers a network of Islamophobic writers, campaigners, funders and politicians who combined to bring about the conditions in which Donald Trump would be elected President in November 2016.  Return to Arms: Hadaka - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2850

There are large Kurdish communities in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and parts of Iran. Many among them aspire to an independent Kurdish state. But while the Turkish, Syrian and Iraqi Kurds are often in the news, much less is known about Iran’s seven million or so Kurds. "Return To Arms: Hadaka" is a rare and exclusive insight into an Iranian Kurdish political party in exile in northern Iraq which has recently renewed its military activity. In this film, Aljazeera Arabic correspondent Salam Hindawi gains access to the little-known but long-established Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan - or Hadaka, to use its Kurdish name.  Young French Arabs: Identity, Equality, Fraternity - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2826

Parisians, many of Arab descent, have been marching in the streets of the capital in protest at Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, in blockaded Gaza and the Occupied West Bank. Paris is a cosmopolitan city and certain areas of France are extremely ethnically diverse. Some cities like Marseille have large Muslim, immigrant populations and while the figures are much lower for the capital, the question of identity is now a burning issue for many young people whose parents emigrated from the MENA region in the 1960s and 70s. France today is arguably still quite mono-cultural. Nationalism is on the rise across Europe and Marine Le Pen of the right-wing National Front is a leading contender in the upcoming presidential elections. The hijab is banned in high schools and government offices, as is the burkini on some beaches. This film is about the combined effect of growing Islamophobia, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the plight of the Palestinians and the 2011 Arab revolutions on the young middle and working class from immigrant backgrounds.  Passport to Freedom - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2840

In Passport to Freedom, Arab nationals from Syria, Iraq, and Egypt describe what's led them either to flee their country as refugees or go abroad to set up a new life – and, in the process, get dual nationality and a second passport. The 2011 revolutions sparked an increase in the numbers of emigrants, wanting to escape political instability and economic uncertainty in several Arab countries. "A Somali in America" documents the experience of Ali Warsame, a Somali refugee who gained residency in the United States in 2015, but is re-assessing his new life now that Donald Trump is president. While in a detention camp in Ukraine, Ali was told he'd be moving to the US through the United Nations refugee resettlement programme. Ali remembers getting the official notification on Eid Day in 2013: "In my life, I never thought that I will be in the USA," he says, because many others before him had been rejected. He moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2013 and began a new life with his housemates, Prince and Sadik, who had had their own difficult and dangerous journeys getting there.  Divorce in Lebanon - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2830

Beirut's recent trash woes have given light to its underlying political instability but Lebanon is often overlooked for its religious tolerance and diversity. The small country that borders the Mediterranean officially recognises 18 different religious denominations, each with the freedom to administer marriage, divorce and alimony matters to those of their faith. Civil marriage is also a viable option for all denominations, and is increasingly popular, especially among couples from different faiths. Some might argue, however, that the increased freedoms come at a price. According to statistics from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, between the years of 2000 and 2013, the divorce rate in Lebanon increased by 55 percent. Regardless, many maintain that the flexibility is necessary. This system legitimises various different religious courts which then coordinate and communicate with other courts, government bodies, that control disputes outside of the religious context.  ISIL in Brussels - Al Jazeera World | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2631

On November 14, 2015, a state of emergency was declared across France, after 130 people were killed and 368 injured in a series of coordinated attacks over a nearly four-hour period, beginning outside the national stadium during a football match and followed by several shootings and a suicide bombing at cafes and restaurants. It was the highest death toll in an attack in Europe since 1988. The police investigation into it focused on fighters belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS). Questions were raised about the extent of ISIL's presence on the continent. Four months later, on March 22, 2016, two bombs were detonated at Brussels airport and one bomb at a metro station in the heart of the Belgian capital. The attacks were claimed by ISIL. Forty-eight people were killed, and more than 300 were injured. Following the Paris attacks, Brussels was put on the highest level of security alert. But it also became the focal point of the search for the cell, considered the most dangerous and wanted group in Europe. Four Belgian nationals became the prime suspects. This ISIL cell, headed by Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was based in Molenbeek, an ethnically diverse district of Brussels. The city emerged as a recruiting ground for ISIL and a base for many of its activities in Europe. ISIL recruitment seems to work through private networks. They are deeply covert and so not easy to track. Cells are not necessarily connected, but there are common factors: 80 percent of their members were born to Arab immigrant families. Al Jazeera correspondent Tamer Al-Misshal goes to Molenbeek to investigate how the cell evaded detection. He uncovers a secret database of Europeans recruited by ISIL to fight in Syria and secretly meets a former ISIL fighter as well as one of the first Belgians to join the group. He investigates ISIL recruitment in jails, as many recruits, including Abdelhamid Abaaoud, have a criminal background, and asks why the authorities failed to track Abaaoud in the criminal justice system. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/
