Βρίσκεται στο νοτιοδυτικό τμήμα του νησιού της Λευκάδας, στον όρμο Βασιλικής, κοντά στο χωριό Αθάνι και σε απόσταση 40 χλμ από την πόλη της Λευκάδας. Το τοπίο είναι μαγευτικό; μια κατάλευκη αμμουδιά ξεκινάει αμέσως μετά την επιφάνεια του γκρεμού, μέχρι να συναντήσει μετά από λίγα μέτρα τα καθαρά και καταγάλανα νερά, το βάθος των οποίων μπορεί να φτάσει και τα 350 μέτρα έξω από τον όρμο. Το περιβάλλον ερημικό, μόνο οι επισκέπτες υπάρχουν, οι οποίοι όμως μπορεί να γεμίσουν τη στενή αυτή λωρίδα γης, ιδιαίτερα τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες. Ευτυχώς όμως, λόγω του δυσπρόσιτου του τοπίου, αλλά και επειδή έγινε γνωστή μόλις από τα μέσα του 1990, δεν έχει αλλοιωθεί από τεχνητές παρεμβάσεις. Υπάρχουν δύο τρόποι για να φτάσει κανείς στην παραλία - είτε μέσω θαλάσσης –με ταχύπλοο δηλαδή, είτε μέσω ξηράς –με όχημα. Αν κανείς επιλέξει τον δεύτερο -φαινομενικά εύκολο- τρόπο, θα έρθει αντιμέτωπος με περίπου εκατό απότομα σκαλιά που θα πρέπει να κατεβεί, ώστε να μπορέσει να δροσιστεί στα κρυστάλλινα νερά. Φτάνοντας κάτω, η περιπέτεια συνεχίζεται για λίγο ακόμα, μιας και τα σκαλιά τελειώνουν σε έναν ορμίσκο, που δεν αποτελεί παρά τον προθάλαμο της μεγάλης παραλίας που βρίσκεται στα αριστερά. Για να καταφέρει κανείς όμως να την προσεγγίσει, πρέπει να βρέξει τα πόδια του, μιας και ένας βράχος κλείνει την πρόσβαση. Μπορεί όλα αυτά να ακούγονται ακραία, ίσως και επικίνδυνες αποστολές, σίγουρα όμως η εικόνα που θα αντικρύσει κανείς φτάνοντας στο επίπεδο της θάλασσας, θα τον αποζημιώσει για οποιαδήποτε ταλαιπωρία και προσπάθεια. Βέβαια, καλό θα είναι να κρατήσει και κάποιες δυνάμεις για το δρόμο του γυρισμού! ----Formal English---- Porto Katsiki Porto Katsiki falls among the six most famous beaches of the Mediterranean, and fairly so, since it consists of one of the most beautiful and virginal coastal landscapes of Greece. It is situated at the southwest part of Lefkada Island at Vasilikís Bay, near Atháni Village and forty kilometers from the main town of Lefkada. The landscape is enchanting; it is an all-white, sandy beach that starts immediately after the surface of the cliff until it meets after a few meters the clean and deep blue waters, the depth of which can reach 350 meters outside the bay. The environment is deserted except for the visitors who may fill this narrow strip of land, especially during the summer months. Fortunately though, because of the inaccessibility of the landscape, as well as because it became known just after the middle of the 1990s, it has not been degraded by artificial interventions. There are two ways for one to reach the beach—either by sea, which is to say by boat, or by land with a vehicle. If one chooses the second and apparently easier way, he or she will have to confront approximately a hundred steep stairs that he or she must descend so as to be able to cool in the crystal waters. Reaching the bottom, the adventure continues for a while longer, since the steps end at a small bay, which consists of nothing more than the anteroom of the big beach that is situated to the left. To be able to approach it, he or she will have to wet his or her feet, since a rock obstructs the access. All these might seem extreme or even an impossible mission; however, for sure the image that the person will face when he or she reaches the sea level will repay him or her off for any suffering and effort. Εξαιτίας του ιδιαιτέρου θρησκευτικού της περιεχομένου, είναι μέρα πένθους και θλίψης, ως πνευματική προετοιμασία πριν από το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα της Ανάστασης. Την ημέρα αυτή οι καμπάνες της εκκλησίας ηχούν πένθιμα από νωρίς το πρωί; κατά τη διάρκεια της λειτουργίας ο ιερέας αποκαθηλώνει τον σταυρωμένο Ιησού και τον τυλίγει σε ένα άσπρο σεντόνι. Στη συνέχεια, το σώμα του δίνεται για προσκύνημα στους πιστούς και αμέσως μετά αρχίζει το στόλισμα του επιταφίου με λουλούδια –τα λεγόμενα χριστολούλουδα- από τις γυναίκες και τα παιδιά της ενορίας. Το απόγευμα, οι στολισμένοι επιτάφιοι κάθε εκκλησίας βγαίνουν στους δρόμους μέχρι αργά το βράδυ, και πλήθος κόσμου τους ακολουθεί. Μπροστά βρίσκονται τα παιδιά, που ντυμένα με τα καλά τους κρατάνε καλάθια με λουλούδια και κεριά αναμμένα, και αμέσως μετά η χορωδία, που τραγουδά πένθιμους σκοπούς. Ο βηματισμός τους γίνεται σε αργό ρυθμό, και πολλές φορές υπό τη συνοδεία μουσικής μπάντας. Επίσης, μερικοί προσκυνητές σχηματίζουν σειρά μπροστά από τον επιτάφιο, ώστε να περάσει από πάνω τους, γιατί μια τέτοια ενέργεια φέρνει ευλογία. Μετά το τέλος της περιφοράς, οι πιστοί παίρνουν από τα λουλούδια του επιταφίου –ένα ο καθένας, αφού θεωρούνται αγιασμένα. Η Μεγάλη Παρασκευή αποτελεί φυσικά μέρα νηστείας ως ένδειξη συμμετοχής στα Πάθη του Χριστού - την τελευταία πριν το φαγοπότι της Ανάστασης, οπότε κρέας, ψάρι και λάδι δεν επιτρέπονται, με πιο δημοφιλές πιάτο τις νερόβραστες φακές.Πολλοί όμως είναι αυτοί που δεν την ακολουθούν αυστηρά, και απλά απέχουν από το κρέας, δοκιμάζοντας χταπόδι στο φούρνο, σουπιές γεμιστές, φασόλια γίγαντες και άλλες παρόμοιες συνταγές. Due to its special religious content, it is a day of grief and sorrow and serves as a spiritual preparation before the joyful message of resurrection. On this day, the church's bells sound mournfully from early in the morning; during the mass, the priest unnails the crucified Jesus and wraps him in a white sheet. Furthermore, his body is delivered for worship to the believers and, immediately after, the ornamentation of the epitaph with flowers—the so-called Christ's flowers—begins by the women and children of the parish. In the afternoon, the decorated epitaphs of each church are carried in the streets until late at night, and many people follow them. In the front are children, who, wearing their best outfits, hold baskets with flowers and lighted candles, and then comes the chorus that sings mournful melodies. Their pace is a slow rhythm, many times accompanied by a music band. Additionally, some believers create a line in front of the epitaphs, so as to pass on top of them, because such an action brings blessing. After the end of the procession, people take the epitaph's flowers—each of them one, since they are considered sanctified. Great Friday is, of course, a day of fast, as an indication of participating in Christ's Passions—the last one before Easter's wassail, therefore meat, fish, and oil are not allowed, with the most popular dish the water-boiled lentils.
