ReGenesis : ReMixed

Toronto-based singer-songwriter Laurel MacDonald has studied the singing traditions of various world cultures, particularly the choral and Gaelic traditions. Her multilayered voice, combined with the varied and eclectic instrumentation in “Green Chapel”, create a richly textured soundscape that works perfectly against picture.

From electronic beats to indigenous drums, the music of Tel-Aviv-based Angel Tears ranges from clubby to tribal and all points in between. Their Asian and Middle-Eastern vocals lend a spiritual quality to many of the songs, and "Dmaot Malach" is no exception. Also featured are the upbeat Latin soul, electronica and pop/rock sounds of "Narco Traffico" by Latin Soul Syndicate.

An exclusive interview with Tom Third, the music composer for ReGenesis whose songs and remixes have been featured prominently throughout the ReGenesis : ReMixed podcast. Tom goes over some of his favourite scenes from the show and how he built the music around them, discusses the unique challenges of writing for a television series like ReGenesis, and talks about the music you’ll hear in the upcoming second season of the ReGenesis TV series.

“The Past Is Never Past” is a sentimental, bittersweet song by singer Andrea Revel, whose music is a blend of folk-pop with light, electronic beats. If her voice sounds familiar, that’s because she’s also the vocalist on the ReGenesis theme that opens each show, a song she also co-wrote. Also featured are the ethereal vocals and moody instrumentation of Kristy Thirsk on “Home For Angels”, definitely a musical highlight from the TV series.

In today's podcast, you'll hear exclusive tracks from "ReGenesis: Music From the Television Series, Volume 1", a best-of compilation featuring musical highlights from the first season of ReGenesis. As always, you'll find out about the musical artists and songs in the series, and get a look at the key scenes where the music was used.

This week we feature the moody, electro-pop sounds of “Smile and Beware” from ultra-talented five-piece Vancouver outfit Girl Nobody and, as always, more tracks and remixes from composer Tom Third.

No strangers to ReGenesis : ReMixed are Rhea’s Obsession, whose music underscores several key emotional scenes in the series. This week, the bewitching duo returns with “Mortal Ground”, another song that has helped mould and define the sound of ReGenesis. Also featured are the sensual grooves and fun, upbeat Latina sounds of Mangana with “Vasilon”.

This episode features the dub-inflected fiery African vocals, ethnic grooves and trippy Eastern melodies of artists Eccodek performing “Bodhichitta Dub”, and a song unlike any other in the ReGenesis TV series: the brooding, rough-around-the-edges blues of Paul Reddick and the Sidemen with “Tumblin’ Down”.

This episode spotlights composer Tom Third, whose world music-flavoured score runs throughout the ReGenesis television series. Also featured is the complete, unedited version of the opening theme of ReGenesis, “Anywhere But Here” by Behavior.

Songs and artists featured in this episode are Girl Nobody’s “Cages”, replete with themes of alienation, loss and vulnerability, and the haunting, dreamy, abstract qualities of “Bye Bye Baby” by Hawaii.
