Hi, I'm Francis Keany - author and broadcast journalist. Welcome to The Trough, your daily news feed. This podcast is a bit of an experiment - a daily ten minute bite-sized wrap of all the political stories you need to know before you get to work each morning. It's something I've been keen on doing for some time and I hope you guys will love it. I'll be running this for the next few weeks as I explore the world of freelance journalism. For those wondering about the name, The Trough is a nickname given to the Parliamentary Staff Cafeteria in Canberra, where politicians, staffers and journalists can dine for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is the occasional complaint about the serving sizes of the Beef Stroganoff

Don't mope, mobilize. Our country and our future is at stake. Each week I will bring you a hard hitting, under-reported story about what is really going on, whether it's turning back the clock on abortion rights, voter suppression, or Trump's bald faced lies. I'll have an interview with a thinker you won't hear anywhere else, and positive stories from #TheResistance and specific actions you can take. Because action is the antidote to anguish. So put on your big girl (or boy) pantsuit and join me in standing for our values!

THE DEMOCRACY TEST with Heather Cox Richardson and Neal Conan The presidency of Donald Trump has sparked a national conversation .Is our democracy at risk? Across the country, scholars, activists and citizens are taking stock.  With an eye on how democracies have failed throughout history, and on the rise of authoritarian leaders across the globe, they ask the question … can it happen here? The Democracy Test gives a broad and diverse national platform to this work as we seek to understand what is truly unique in this moment of our nation’s history, what brought us here, and what it would take to emerge with an even stronger understanding of what democracy means in America and what we can do now to move toward an even stronger expression of  its ideals.
