Thirty years ago – in the second year of our marriage -- my husband Gene and I (with our toddler Brooke in tow) took – what turned out to be – a glorious two month motor trip across Canada and Alaska – starting in Quebec and winding up in British Columbia. I still smile as I think of Gene shaving in our motor home’s rear view mirror on a cool morning by a pristine lake in Yukon Territory. I still cherish the extraordinary kindness of a farmer in Saskatchewan who rescued us from a ditch when our vehicle slid down an embankment. I still fill up with awe as I recall the staggering beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I still feel the excitement of the chuck wagon races at the Calgary Stampede, still ooh at the kick of the kitsch in Dawson’s Creek, still savor the aroma of Montreal’s culinary delights, still cherish my familial connections to Nova Scotia, still marvel at the enduring culture and artistry of the Tlingit, still delight in the metropolitan flair of Ottawa, Canada’s capitol city. Two years prior to this journey, Gene and I made our way -- in a Chevy Blazer -- across the United States stopping to applaud the precise timing of Old Faithful at Yellowstone, to laugh at the delightful antics of the black-tailed prairie dogs near Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, to estimate the miles to the next grain silo on the Great Plains, to marvel at all the wares (a jackalope?) on offer at Wall Drug . . . another wonderful adventure! Now we’ve auctioned our home and most the contents and are making the final preparations to hit the road again but -- this time – in a truck with a 38-foot fifth wheel trailer and with Mac and Molly, our sibling pair of four-year-old Old English Sheepdogs, along for the ride. With no specific itinerary, we'll travel about the United States and Canada reporting from the well-traveled thoroughfares and lightly-traveled lanes on the joys and challenges of sharing the open road with two-hundred-plus-pounds of dog. We’ll give you a heads up on what's dog-friendly along the way and we'll seek out the usual and the unusual, the celebrated and the hidden. We’ll report on fascinating places and events, intriguing trends, creative artists, unusual hobbyists, hard workers, odd jobbers, cutting-edge technology and old-time pleasures. Listeners may expect the light-hearted and the serious, entertainment, information, insights, passion, a fresh eye . . . all depending on the subject matter for each particular show. To be honest, seeing SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS play anything, anywhere has been unforgettable. The whole Brownswood Family decamping to Sête in the South of France for the Worldwide Festival each summer: Watching José James deliver his version of Coltrane’s Equinox with the glittering sea behind, as the sun sets over the open air ampitheatre. Picking out the freshest of new tunes with which to bless the Bubblers compilation series. Crossing Europe with our 2007 Brownswood Loves Jazz tour. Recently starting up a regular montly Brownswood night at Nublu in New York City. It’s all go. It’s all been great fun, and there’s more to come. 2008 brings the eagerly anticipated debut album from New York jazz vocalist José James. It’s the culmination of two years work with José and we’re more than excited. In fact we’d humbly suggest, it’s not overstating it to say he’s a singular voice and the record he’s delivered is nothing short of a masterpiece. You’ve been warned. Edgar Allan Poe Poems by Edgar Allan Poe
Best known for his scary tales, mystery and detective stories and imaginative fantasy stories, Edgar Allan Poe was also a gifted poet. He wrote more than 70 poems and almost all of them have been widely appreciated by readers and critics alike. This collection contains some of his most famous ones, including the immortal Raven, which combines a sense of doom and nameless despair. With its ringing, alliterative and repetitive lines and strange, supernatural atmosphere, it remains one of Poe's best known and most quoted poems. Other poems in the anthology include The Bells, which was published after Poe's death. This poem is one of his most “acoustic” poems. It is divided into four parts and with each succeeding part, the sound of the bells becomes more and more sinister and gloomy. It was rejected several times by different publishers who felt that it skirted the thin line between verse and nonsense. However, in later years, composers like Rachmaninoff composed a sonata based on the poem and created a choral symphony for the bell sounds. Contemporary bands like Pink Floyd have also referenced it in their song “Time.” Ulalume is another well known Poe poem. This one again focuses on sound and was originally written as an elocution piece. Scholars have speculated that the poem's dark and dismal theme is similar to The Raven's and could be rooted in the grief that Poe felt after recently losing his beloved wife, Virginia. Ulalume is also full of classical allusions to different myths and legends. The original text of the poem contains a brilliant illustration by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Annabel Lee is the last complete poem written by Poe. This one also speaks of loss, love and despair. To My Mother is actually written to his mother-in-law and aunt, Maria Clemm. It is sometimes entitled Sonnet to My Mother and was published as a tribute to the mother of the woman he deeply loved, his wife Virginia. Lesser known poems like The Coliseum, The Conqueror Worm, To One in Paradise, To Francis S Osgood and others form the rest of the collection along with many others. In his short but memorable life, Poe created a whole new genre of writing. He is generally acknowledged as the father of detective fiction and also of the emerging genre of sci-fi. His works have influenced studies in fields as diverse as cosmology and cryptography. His deeply unhappy childhood and subsequent violent disagreements with his adoptive parents created much sadness in his young life, but he overcame his difficulties and found himself in writing. Poe's poems must be read aloud to be completely savored and this volume would certainly provide hours of enjoyable family reading or listening!
