These medications help patients with psychosis lead a more normal and fulfilling life by alleviating such symptoms as hallucinations, both visual and auditory, and paranoid thoughts. However, there are side-effects accompanying these medications. Side effects that may be seen in patient taking antipsychotic medications include drowsiness, rapid heartbeat, blurred vision, photosensitivity, skin rashes and dizziness when changing position. Anti-psychotics are further classified into subtypes, the more recently developed antipsychotic medications have much lesser side effects though the earlier released type is still being used.
