Il latino è stato la lingua ufficiale durante l’Impero romano. Per questo motivo ha profondamente influenzato le lingue in diversi territori europei. Oltretutto, esso ha anche rappresentato la lingua ufficiale della chiesa cattolica per un periodo molto lungo. Considerando tutti questi elementi, è facile capire perché le suddette lingue siano così simili fra loro e a volte possano sembrare una sola lingua, nonostante le differenze. Allo stesso tempo è molto interessante sottolineare come la lingua italiana sia un fenomeno molto recente. L’Italia, infatti, è stata fondata coma nazione solo nel 1861 e la lingua parlata al tempo era molto diversa dall’italiano standard che conosciamo oggi: in altre parole, l’italiano standard non esisteva. Gli italiani hanno parlato dialetti locali per molto tempo. Questi dialetti erano profondamente diversi l’uno dall’altro. Se un cittadino proveniente da Milano avesse provato a parlare con un siciliano, non si sarebbero probabilmente capiti. Ciò accadrebbe tuttora, considerando la diversità dei dialetti. La nascita dell’italiano standard è stato un fenomeno abbastanza recente che è gradualmente cresciuto a causa dell’introduzione di nuovi strumenti tecnologici. La TV ha decisamente giocato un ruolo chiave in questo processo. Infatti, grazie alla diffusione di programmi televisivi ed emittenti radio negli anni ’50 e ’60 in Italia, la gente si è abituata al nuovo italiano standard promosso dai mass-media e ha iniziato a parlarlo, abbandonando gradualmente l’uso di dialetti e gerghi locali. ----Informal English---- On the history of the Italian language Italian is a Romance language. This means that it derives from Latin along with other languages as Italian, French and Portuguese. All these languages have several common features, vocabulary and grammatical structures, which we cannot find in languages like English or German. Latin had been the official language during the Roman Empire. For this reason, it had deeply influenced languages in several territories in Europe. In addition to that, it had also represented for a very long time the official language of the Catholic Church. By considering all these factors, it’s easy to understand why the above mentioned languages are so similar and sometimes sound like the same language, despite the differences. At the same time it’s very interesting to underline how Italian language is a very recent phenomenon. Italy in fact was founded as a nation in 1861, and the language spoken at that time was really different from the standard Italian that we know today: in other words, the standard Italian didn’t exist. Italian people had been speaking local dialects for a very long time. These dialects were deeply different from one another. If a citizen coming from Milan had tried to talk with a Sicilian citizen, they wouldn’t probably have understood each other. This would still happen today, considering the diversity of dialects. The birth of standard Italian has been a quite recent phenomenon that gradually increased because of the introduction of new technological tools.
