Set in the late 1960s/early 1970s, it is loosely based on the life story of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patch_Adams">Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams</a> and the book <em>Gesundheit: Good Health Is a Laughing Matter</em> by Dr. Adams and Maureen Mylander.
