People who are more stressed by poverty and discrimination, succumb at higher rates to illness and early death.<br> That’s because stress begets inflammation in the body. And inflammation begets all kinds of ills, like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.<br> But it’s not just our bodies. The whole planet is inflamed. In their book Inflamed, Rupa Marya and Raj Patel draw a link between the body, as both metaphor and exemplar of inflammation, to climate change.<br> They say that inflammation is a biological, social, economic, and ecological pathway. All these pathways intersect in a manner constructed by the modern capitalist system.<br> Raj Patel is the New York Times bestselling author of The Value of Nothing, Stuffed and Starved and other books. Rupa Marya is a physician, activist, and co-founder of the <a href="https://www.donoharmcoalition.org/">Do No Harm Coalition</a>.<br> <a href="http://Francesca%20Rheannon%20Well,%20Raj%20Patel%20and%20Rupa%20Marya,%20welcome%20to%20Writers%20Voice.%20This%20was%20just%20such%20an%20amazing%20book%20to%20read,%20Inflamed:%20Deep%20Medicine%20And%20The%20Anatomy%20Of%20Injustice.%20It's%20a%20deeply%20researched%20and%20profoundly%20radical%20look%20at%20the%20links%20between%20the%20human%20body,%20the%20body%20of%20the%20world,%20and%20the%20body%20politic.%20I%20want%20to%20start%20out%20by%20asking%20what%20brought%20each%20of%20you%20to%20write%20the%20book.%20Let's%20start%20with%20Rupa%20Marya.%20You're%20a%20physician%20and%20an%20activist;%20what%20brought%20you%20to%20write%20this%20book?%20%20%5BAt%20this%20point%20a%20hurricane%20warning%20alert%20went%20off%20in%20my%20phone.%20It%20was%20for%20Hurricane%20Henri,%20which%20had%20been%20forecast%20to%20be%20a%20direct%20hit%20on%20my%20town,%20but%20which%20actually%20ended%20up%20missing%20us.%20So%20when%20we%20resumed%20the%20interview,%20Rupa%20Marya%20referenced%20the%20extreme%20weather%20that%20our%20messing%20with%20the%20climate%20is%20bringing%20to%20us%20ever%20more%20often.%5D%20Rupa%20Marya%20%20Well%20that%20is%20the%20reason%20we%20were%20inspired%20to%20write%20this%20book,%20because%20we%20are%20in%20the%20midst%20of%20a%20Code%20Red%20for%20humanity.%20And%20it's%20impacting%20every%20area%20of%20our%20lives.%20This%20book%20for%20me%20was%20a%20chance%20to%20put%20down%20and%20investigate%20and%20really%20draw%20the%20connections,%20weave%20the%20connections,%20between%20the%20things%20I'd%20seen%20at%20the%20bedsides%20of%20so%20many%20patients%20and%20in%20communities%20where%20I%20work%20--%20you%20know,%20accompanying%20groups%20who%20are%20struggling%20for%20their%20own%20health%20and%20their%20dignity.%20So%20it%20was%20a%20real%20wonderful%20opportunity%20to%20sit%20with%20Raj%20and%20put%20our%20minds%20together%20to%20make%20these%20connections%20that%20neither%20of%20us%20could%20have%20made%20alone.%20Francesca%20Rheannon%20And%20Raj,%20you%20are%20a%20scholar%20of%20the%20food%20system.%20What%20brought%20you%20to%20write%20this%20book%20with%20with%20Rupa%20Marya?%20Raj%20Patel%20Well,%20it's%20odd%20living%20under%20this%20particular%20capitalist%20colonialist%20civilization,"></a>
