The Drive with Alan Taylor show

Summary:

Welcome Back! This week Alan starts his show with BJ Killeen Automotive Journalist and Voice of Reason. They jump right onto the topic of used car prices being at an all time high. Due to the chip shortage, dealerships can’t fill the lots with new inventory. BJ shares for example that it takes an average of 1100 chips per F150. Wow! Volvo and Toyota have cut production by 60% because of this shortage. BJ Killeen got to ride in a Ford F150 Lightning. She says it’s beyond amazing. 775 pounds of torque. It’s mind blowing how fast this vehicle is off the line! Ford went from 40,000 models to 80,000 to keep up with the demand. This truck can power your house from its “Frunk”. BJ and Alan talk about the new Genesis GV60 Electric SUV. Alan shares he was picked up in a Genesis GV80 and thought it was a Cadillac. Shifting gears, Alan welcomes Brian Moody – Executive Editor for Autotrader.com. Alan and Brian talk about current average used car market and prices that will blow your mind. People are paying 5 to 17% over the sticker price depending on what vehicle they are looking for. The highest is the luxury cars like the Mercedes Benz G Wagon at 17% to Kia’s Telluride or the Carnival @ 8%, and the list goes on from Hyundai Palisade, Honda Ridgeline, Land Rover Defender, to the Cadillac Escalade. Alan says the dealerships have a wide array of used cars on their lots and very little of new. Brian say’s the used car list price over $25,101. Brian explains how dealerships usually have “60 day supplies” which means they have enough stock to sell for 60 days without receiving new stock. Now everyone wants a used car so the “day supplies” are a lot shorter. Even for cars like the Kia Carnival, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade, these are ones you would never go out to buy over MSRP price but now you are. Brian shares that Volvo says if you buy one of their electric vehicles, specifically the SUVs like a Volvo XC40 they will give you free charging. Well free for a limited time that is. They are partnering with Electrify America which is owned by Volkswagen. They are joining forces to have people buy their electric vehicles. Alan brings up a point about the availability of charging stations/refueling stations and how long it takes to refuel with gas vs charging your vehicle for 5 to 8 hours. Brian agrees and says it’s the Achilles heel to electric vehicles. Tesla has equipped their charging stations with a “supercharger” that will take about 15 mins for about an 80% recharge. Brian claims hydrogen engines are the way to go and will be the solution to this situation to where it will take about 5 mins to refuel. Alan brings up Pebble Beach and how much fun he had. He talks about the exotic cars that were there. It made him think about the “collector car” parts which brings him to his next guest Chris Bright – Co-Founder of CollectorPartExchange.com. Chris explains why he got started in this business, and its because he owned a Porsche 928 and needed parts. Chris goes on to say that If you have collectors car, use them on a daily basis, instead of letting it sit there and deteriorate. Alan shares his story of how he became a car enthusiast. He said he bought a wrecking yard for 5k at the age of 24 and it changed his life. It helped him learn how to do business and become an entrepreneur. Alan asked what is it that they do at Collector Parts Exchange.com. Chris explains that it gives a platform to find “New Old Stock” or used parts for collectors and that it has now become the backbone to the collector’s car industry. Why is it called an ‘Exchange’? They don’t go and buy inventory he explains. They provide a marketplace for suppliers and or individuals who have collector parts and they list them. If you’re looking for a rare or hard part, you can do a search out or a “parts ping” to go out to the car community. They take 5% of the sale.
