Summary: Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. A glove-first, middle infield/utility player, Mario Diaz labored in the minor leagues for seven years before making his major league debut with the Mariners. After brief appearances Seattle from 1987-1989, Diaz was traded to a Mets team looking for middle infield depth with Kevin Elster struggling with injury. Diaz spent a brief time on the major league roster, primarily as a late inning replacement. On July 25, 1990, he entered late into what seemed to be a blowout Mets’ victory—that quickly and dramatically descended into a tense struggle. After a 10-3 lead had evaporated to 10-9, Diaz snared the last out of the game—and became an impromptu part of one of the iconic Bob Murphy’s most memorable calls.
