Summary: <p>Conversation with Khatri Adil Mustak (Bandhani artisan), Khatri Zakiya Adil (Bandhani artisan), Khalid Usman Khatri (Ajrakh artisan), Pachan Premji Siju (Weaver) and Prakash Naranbhai Siju ( Weaver) on why is design education important and how has it helped them change their lives. Few of them used to do job-work earlier and struggled with making ends meet. Its their true story - wherein education helped them see light at the end of the tunnel.</p> <p><br></p> <p>"Our approach towards designing a product has changed. We now use one idea of design and create about 10 different product, each very different from the other. This has happened because of the exposure we got while learning the basics of colour, design and themes at Somaiya Kala Vidya" shared all the artisans unanimously.</p> <p><br></p> <p>All five of these artisans have earned accolades for their designs and work. What keeps them going is their passioon to create something new and challenging every single time.</p> <p><br></p> <p>"Customers want something new every time. We want to cater to the changing demands of consumers and offer a product that is not just modern but also is true to our heritage" shared Zakiya Adil Khatri, a bandhani artisan.</p> <p><br></p> <p>In the current times when the riding slogan is “Vocal for Local”, we as consumers need to educate ourselves on the back-story of making of each craft to appreciate the skill, time and talent.
