Summary: I began playing the fiddle back in February of this year. I bought myself a $70 violin, as it was all I could afford (given that I'm a teenager and don't have a lot of spending money). No teacher, and no plans on going to one, though I would benefit greatly from it! "Oh Susannah" was the first tune I learned, and listening to the way I play it, it seems apparent that it's different from just about every other version out there. I don't find a problem in that though!
