Summary: Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past Though current and future generations may come to know him more as the father of Fernando Tatis Jr.—visiting town this week with the San Diego Padres—Fernando Tatis was once himself a top prospect in baseball in the late 1990s. We’ll hear about the promising start to his career—including a history-making day in 1999 when the third baseman became the only player in baseball history to hit two grand slams in one inning—before Tatis saw his career derailed by injuries. After toiling in the minors for several seasons, Tatis came up to the Mets in May of 2008. We will reminisce about several memorable moments that the veteran supplied in that historic final season at Shea Stadium on his way to winning the 2008 National League Comeback Player of the Year award. In addition, we’ll touch on the prominent role former Met GM Omar Minaya played in Tatis’s career and life.
