Summary: Fight Recap of the Week Roy Jones Jr wins another meaningless fight this past Saturday Returning home for the first time since March of 2015, former world champion Roy Jones Jr. (64-9, 46 KOs) scored a one-sided ten round unanimous decision over “Rocking” Rodney Moore (17-12-2, 7 KOs) in a cruiserweight bout on Saturday night at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida. It was mostly a slow-paced affair as the 47-year-old future Hall of Famer Jones, with his hands held low, stalked Moore — who gave very little resistance. As a result, it very easy for Jones to pot shot his way to victory. Scores were 100-90 on all three cards. Jones suffered injury to right bicep in win 47-year-old future Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. told the Pensacola News Journal that he suffered an injury to his right bicep in round five on Saturday night against journeyman Rodney Moore. “We’ll just have to see how long this takes (to heal),” Jones told the paper after the fight. “It was the best condition I’ve been in a long time. I felt strong the whole time.” As for his future in the ring, Jones stated the fight “may have been the last one. And I’m not mad if it is, because I had a great time. Everybody in Pensacola got to see Roy fight one more time.” Antonio Margarito one step closer to losing his eye for good Former world champion Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (40-8, 27 KOs) scored a ten round split decision over Ramon “Inocente” Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KOs) to claim the WBO Continental super welterweight title on Saturday night at the Baja California Center in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico. After a slow start, Margarito’s pressure started paying dividends. Alvarez’ punches had little effect as Margarito walked him down. Alvarez was down round eight, but rallied bravely in the final round. Scores were 97-92, 97-92 Margarito, 95-94 for Alvarez. Alvarez’ brother “Canelo” Alvarez was at ringside. Will this fight set up a Klitschko-style “revenge of the brother” showdown? Note: JC Chavez Jr was also ringside for Margarito vs Alvarez. Saul and Jr were seen taking pictures together after the fight News of The Week Cotto vs Gamboa now is the rumor Yuriorkis Gamboa (25-1, 17 KOs), the former Olympic gold medalist, two time world champion and current IBF #5 ranked junior lightweight, the long road back to the top may lead all the way to the junior middleweight division. Reports from the Gamboa camp indicate that they are “close” to an HBO fight with one of the biggest names in boxing: four time world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs). Although Cotto’s last fight was in November of 2015 at middleweight, Gamboa and his advisor Zeferino Ramirez were excited about the opportunity to fight the legendary Puerto Rican. The former Puerto Rican Olympian suffered the accident last Sunday, August 7, when he was riding on road PR-3 from Rio Grande to Carolina and lost control of his motorcycle after trying to avoid a bump on the road. “I have definitely learned a big lesson. I’m not perfect. I’ll keep growing as a person and today I’m more committed than ever with my people and my career,” affirmed Verdejo. “I want to thank Puerto Rico and all the boxing fans for all the messages of support during this difficult time, for worrying about me and for putting me in your prayers,” added ‘El Diamante’. “Thanks to God, I’m ready to keep on fighting, with scars that will make me remember this learning experience. I feel more mature, focused and anxious to bring to my Island the happiness of a world title,” finalized saying Verdejo. “A painful and costly accident that will hopefully provide Felix and all young athletes life long lasting lessons.
