Summary: Canelo dethrones Smith with ninth round KO By Jeff Zimmerman and Miguel Maravilla at ringside (fightnews.com) Returning to the 154lb division, former middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) scored a ninth round KO over WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-1-1, 13 KOs) in front of an estimated 51,240 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Canelo took command in round one against the slower Smith. In round two, Canelo landed hard shots to the body, while Smith started to connnect late. Canelo was cut over left eye. Canelo dropped Smith with a right to the ear in round seven, but Smith dealt with Alvarez’ follow up attack. Smith down from a body shot in round eight. The finish came with another body shot in round nine. As the co-main event Philly's "King" Gabriel Rosado (23-10, 13 KOs) battled Willie "El Mongoose" Monroe, Jr. (21-2, 6 KOs), of Rochester, NY in a 12-round match for the vacant WBO Intercontinental Middleweight. Starting out, the fighters tested each other as they kept their distance by using jabs and counterpunches. As the rounds progressed, the fighter's aggression grew, with Rosado pushing Monroe after the bell for the ninth round. In the eleventh round, Rosado landed a body shot to Monroe while also suffering an accidental headbutt. In the end, the judges determined "El Mongoose" the champion of this fight by unanimous decision with scores of 112-116, 110-118, 111-117. Fan favorite and former Olympian Joseph "Jojo" Diaz, Jr. (22-0, 13 KOs)of South El Monte, Calif. put his NABF Featherweight Title on the line as he faced Blythe, Calif.'s Andrew "El Chango" Cancio (17-4-2, 13 KOs)in an entertaining scheduled 10-round scrap. In the first rounds, both fighters tested one another, as each exchanged blocks and blows in hopes of winning the fight. By round five, Diaz, Jr. continued to do work defending himself and landing devastating punches to Cancio. By 2:27 of the ninth round, Cancio's corner stopped the fight, giving Diaz, Jr. a technical knockout victory to retain his title. Golovkin’s 23rd straight knockout and his 17th world title defense took place at The O2 in London, England in front over a capacity crowd of over 19,000 fight fans as he retained his WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO Middleweight World Titles. Also on Saturday, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, (46-0, 38 KO’s) thrilled the crowd of 6,714 at The Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles, with a unanimous decision over former WBC Super Flyweight World Champion and previously undefeated Carlos “El Principe” Cuadras, (35-1-1, 27KO’s). The fight viewed by 833,000 fight fans on HBO World Championship Boxing earned Gonzalez his fourth divisional world title in a clash that is a certain 2016 “Fight of the Year” candidate according to many of the international media in attendance at The Fabulous Forum.
