Summary: Terry Laibach, an environmental specialist concerned largely with solid waste who works with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, discusses the economics and environmental impact of the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. While the United States has 4 percent of the world’s population, it produces 25% of the world’s solid waste. At one time, the solution to this waste burden was to burn it, with poor consequences for the environment. Today about 80 percent of such waste can be eliminated, and in this program Ms. Laibach gives a number of tips on ways to do just that.
