Summary: In observance of Health Literacy Month, this podcast episode features an expert panel that will explore the definition and understanding of what health literacy means. The discussion will include how to incorporate and use a skills-based health education approach to help develop health-literate students; how to use technology to help develop health-literate students; examples of assessments that can lead to health-literate students; and great resources to assist in teaching health literacy. Panelists include: *Melanie Lynch – Melanie is in her 21ST year as a health education specialist at State College Area High School in Pennsylvania after receiving an undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Penn State University. In 2016, she received the SHAPE America National Health Education Teacher of the Year award, and she is currently serving as president of PSAHPERD. *Claudia Brown – Claudia holds a B.S. from Springfield College and a master’s degree from American International College. She has been teaching health and physical education in the North Reading Public Schools for 19 years, focusing on curriculum development in HPE for the last six years. She also serves as an adjunct professor of health education at Boston University. Claudia has participated on the Massachusetts AHPERD board for several years, and currently sits as president.
