10 Years of Wargaming Recon – Wargaming Recon #165

Podcasts – Wargaming Recon show

Summary: Discover listener’s favorite episodes of Wargaming Recon.  Jonathan shares his fondest memories and reveals a humbling announcement about the show in this special 10th anniversary episode. The longest-running tabletop wargaming podcast on the planet   Through his research Neil discovered the 3 longest-running shows are Drop Pod Cast, his Meeples & Miniatures, and Wargaming Recon.  Neil also said according to dates on the feeds Wargaming Recon takes first place by 6 days and it has been around 6 months longer than Meeples & Miniatures.  Other podcasts like the Dice Tower, This Week in Tech, & The Adam Carolla Show, for example, have been around longer but, they’re not tabletop wargaming podcasts.   Brief History of Wargaming Recon When the show began began it had a different name.  A contest resulted in the Wargaming Recon name. It also had an unusual release schedule for the 2007 podcasting season.  But, Dan Carlin released two episodes almost six months apart in 2015. Episode 111: How Jonathan Became a Wargamer tells the Wargaming Recon origin story. Episode 93: Interviewing Jonathan also dives into some of the origin story a bit.  Guest Aaron Bostian put Jonathan in the hot seat and interviewed him. Episode 1: Introducing Wargaming Recon is the first episode released August 17, 2006.  It reviewed some Lord of the Rings minis by Games Workshop, discussed the GW Webway and Black Gobbo newsletters.  It was re released in 2013 with better editing, new intro, and 20:11 running time.  New Name the Show Contest September 2011  Episode 63: Wargaming Recon is Born announced the new name.  Episode 64: Historical Modelling is first episode to use the new name This means this is the 101st episode to use the new name. Have to thank contest winners Cort & Andrew (may Andrew rest in peace) for the show’s name.  Jonathan’s Favorite Memories Episode 58: Henry Hyde and Battlegames Magazine Henry Hyde’s first guest appearance.  He helped me to get into historical wargaming.  Without him I’m not sure I’d be playing historicals.  He’s kindly supported contests on the show and been a willing recurring guest. ReCast #1: CWF-2006-12-7 Solo-Cast w/ CWF Holiday Gift Guide, Chester French, Privateer Press Updates, and Pearl Harbor Day It has always been difficult for family members to understand this hobby. They don’t have an easy time finding hobby related gifts for me.  I wanted to make it easier for all of you. Extra Life Game-a-thon episodes 103: 25hr Game-a-thon for Children’s Hospital, 126: Extra Life 24hr Game-a-thon 2014, and 149: 2015 in Review. We have raised $1,554.68 over 4 years for sick kids to receive medical treatments they need but can’t afford.  Listeners have gotten involved in cool ways too.  Listener Dave started the eBay charity auction. This year we have multiple items to auction on eBay with proceeds benefiting Boston Children’s Hospital. Last year I did a live show for several hours & even painted a Flames of War objective marker on live air.  Friends and listeners have also come to my home to play games as part of the event. TotalCon appearances & coverage This has become an annual tradition except for the year my daughter was born.  Con organizers have welcomed me like family and I’ve used that to create better episodes for listeners. I have made contacts with lots of people who’ve been guests on the show & it has led to Wargaming Recon being the flagship tabletop wargaming podcast for the TSR Podcast Network Some of the amazing people I’ve networked with are: Angelia Parenteau, Steve Parenteau, Ben & Jenn Gerber, Jay & Renee Libby, Peter “Blix” Bryant, Mike Kafes, James Carpio, Mary Lindholm, Tim Kask, Frank Mentzer, Brenden of Crossroad Games, Gordon & Denise of Adler Boardgame Cafe, Mike Paine, listeners Patrick and Dan, and too many others My friendship wi[...]
