By 17 he was already contracted to Paton & Black Racing Co, competing on land and sea, from circuit racing and speedway to stock cars, drag cars and offshore power boats. In these early years it wasn't uncommon for Johnny to be found at race tracks even, when the circuits were closed, mentally visualising racing laps.<br> By 21 he had completed his engineering studies, played state level Rugby Union and survived a stint in the Army. Requiring funding to compete internationally in European, American and United Kingdom Single Seater Formula racing as a prelude to Formula 1 and Indy Car competitions, he began door knocking Sydney real estate agencies.
