The city got its name from its founder and from the sandy terrain upon which it was built. Kristiansand is also the capital of Vest-Agder County in southern Norway. According to the most recent census, the municipality of Kristiansand has a population of just over eighty-two thousand people. Kristiansand is located at the southern tip of Norway, along the ocean's shore. The Otra and Tovdalselva Rivers also run through Kristiansand. Its archipelago and beaches are popular vacation destinations for Norwegians and other Europeans in the summer. The winter tends to bring heavy snowfall, so the ski trails attract visitors during the winter months. The climate in Kristiansand is surprisingly temperate; the North Atlantic Current increases air temperature. The coastal areas in particular tend to have much milder winter temperatures than do other regions at similar latitudes. From Kristiansand one can access the rest of Europe by boat or airplane.
