Summary: The struggle for education has been a part of every major uprising for racial justice that Black people have engaged in throughout U.S. history. Today, the Black Lives Matter movement is arising in the context of a massive corporate education reform agenda which is cloaked in the language of civil rights yet promotes policies that maintain institutional racism and the school-to-prison-pipeline. The contradictions of unhinged police murder of Black people in the "land of the free," coupled with corporate education reformers' racist schooling policies in the name of "closing the achievement gap," are producing the beginning of a new social movements for racial justice.
