Summary: Mental health issues impact one in four Americans in any given year, with depression affecting more than 19 million. About one in 17 has a severe and possibly life threatening disease, such as manic depression/bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. This year's Mental Health Awareness Month highlighted the importance of being connected socially - with family and friends, the community, and with professional help. A leading psychiatrist wants to emphasize the incredible advancements in treatment in the mental health profession. Dr. Richard DeVaul, head of the Leadership in Medicine Program at the College of Medicine, Texas A&M Health Science Center and a practicing psychiatrist will talk about the advancements made in this field over the years. Dr. DeVaul will give tips about what people dealing with mental health disorders can do for treatment, and offer insights into what future treatments might be available.
