007: What You Must Understand About Leadership

The Rising Leader Podcast show

Summary: Leadership is not management. People often get confused between the roles of a manager and a leader. According to Warren Bennis, management is about doing things right, while leadership is about doing the right things. Being in a management role before serving as a leader can easily bias your leadership so it's important that emerging leaders understand the distinction between the two roles. Another key distinction is that management roles are often appointed, while leadership roles are chosen. The reason for this is because you can choose to lead without a title. You can lead people at your level of management, your peers, and people above you also in leadership roles. In short, leadership is about social influence and not about managing processes and procedures. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner share their "Leadership Practices" in their book The Leadership Challenge. These practices exemplify social influences. 1. Model the Way 2. Inspire a Share Vision 3. Enable Others to Act 4. Challenge the Status Quo 5. Encourage the Heart Key Links: Leave a review on iTunes
