Don't forget to stop by ThaiPod101.com for more great Thai Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- วันลอยกระทง ประเพณีลอยกระทงตรงกับวันเพ็ญ เดือน 12 ตามปฏิทินทาง จันทรคติ ก็คือประมาณเดือนพฤศจิกายนตามปฏิทินสากล ถึงแม้ว่าวันลอยกระทงจะไม่ใช่วันหยุดทางราชการ แต่ก็เป็นวันที่มีความสำคัญมากวันหนึ่งของประเทศไทย การลอยกระทงนี้กำหนดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นการบูชาและขอขมาต่อพระแม่คงคาสำหรับสิ่งไม่ดีที่เราได้ทำไว้กับแม่น้ำ ผู้คนจะพากันทำกระทงจากวัสดุที่หาง่ายตามธรรมชาติ เช่น หยวกกล้วย มาตบ แต่งเป็นรูปคล้ายดอกบัวบาน ปักธูปเทียนและดอกไม้ ก่อนทำการลอยในแม่น้ำก็จะอธิษฐานในสิ่งที่มุ่งหวังพร้อมขอขมาต่อ พระแม่คงคา แล้วนำไปลอยในแม่น้ำ ลำธาร คลอง ทะเลสาบ ทะเล หรือแม้แต่อ่างน้ำที่บ้านก็ได้ นอกจากนี้ยังมีการประกวด กระทงเพื่อความสวยงามและความสร้างสรรค์ การประกวด นางงามเรียกว่า นางนพมาส เพราะตามตำนานเชื่อว่านาง นพมาสซึ่งเป็นสนมเอกของพ่อขุนรามคำแหง กรุงสุโขทัย เป็น ผู้ประดิษฐ์กระทงเป็นคนแรก มีความเชื่อกันว่าประเพณีลอยกระทงเริ่มมีมาแต่สมัยสุโขทัย แต่ในปัจจุบันมีการฉลองประเพณีลอยกระทงกันทั่วประเทศ ในกรุงเทพมหานครคนส่วนใหญ่จะไปลอยกระทงที่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ที่จังหวัดสุโขทัยจะมีการแสดงแสง สี และเสียงที่บริเวณ เมืองเก่า สวยงามน่าชมมาก แต่ที่ที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุด คือ ที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ มีการจัดงานฉลองนานประมาณ 1 อาทิตย์ ถนนบริเวณเมืองเก่าจะถูกปิดตอนกลางคืน และมีการ ตั้งร้านค้าและเวทีการแสดง ตอนกลางคืนของวันลอยกระทง มีการแห่กระทงขนาดใหญ่ และประกวดนางนพมาส นอกจากนั้น ยังมีประเพณีโคมลอย หรือยี่เป็ง ควบคู่กันกับประเพณีลอยกระทง ซึ่งมีความเชื่อว่าเป็นการปล่อยความโศกเศร้าและเรื่องร้ายต่างๆ ให้ไปพ้นจากตัว ชาวบ้านจะทำโคมลอยจากกระดาษสีขาวบางๆ แล้วจุดตะเกียงไฟตรงกลางเพื่อให้ไอความร้อนพา โคมลอยขึ้นไปในอากาศเหมือนลูกบอลลูน ประเพณีนี้สวยงามมาก โคมไฟเป็นพันดวงลอยขึ้นไปบนท้องฟ้ายามค่ำคืนเหมือน ดวงดาวเต็มท้องฟ้า เป็นภาพที่สวยจนทำให้นักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติมาร่วมทำพิธีกันมากมาย ----Formal English---- "Loy Krathong" Festival "Loy Krathong" is held on the full moon of the twelfth month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the Western calendar, this usually falls in November. Although not an official public holiday, "Loy Kratong" is one of the most popular of Thailand's traditional festivals. It is believed that floating a "Krathong" ("raft") in a river is to honor and pay respect to the Goddess of the Water and to apologize to the Goddess of the Water for the bad things we have done to the river. Thai people will make a raft from natural materials such as a section of banana tree trunk and decorate it to look like a lotus with flowers, candles, and incense sticks. Before floating the "krathong," they make a wish and apologize to the Goddess of the Water, then float it in the river, creeks, canals, lakes, seas, or even a tub at home. Additionally, there is a "krathong" contest regarding its beauty and craftsmanship and a beauty contest called "Nang Noppamas." According to legend, Noppamas was a consort of the Sukhothai King Ramkhamhaeng, and she was the first to float the decorated "krathong." It is believed that the Thai tradition of "Loy Kratong" started off in Sukhothai, but it is now celebrated throughout Thailand. In Bangkok, most people flock to the banks of the Chao Phraya river to float their "krathongs." In Sukhothai, there is an elaborate sound and light show. It is quite impressive.
