STP 009: Aaron Krause & The Scrub Daddy

Shark Tank Podcast show

Summary: Scrub Daddy cleans up in the SHARK TANK! "Shark Tank is real, and it inspires people to invent, create, and start their own companies." Aaron Krause created a nifty little sponge that he calls Scrub Daddy.  He went on Shark Tank and had a few of the sharks stepping over each other to do a deal with him.  During our Podcast you will hear all the things that you didn't hear in the Shark Tank. Aaron is a specialist in materials and he came up with the formula for his specialty material on his own.  He originally had designed it for car mechanics but it wasn't the right fit...It sat for years before Aaron realized he had unknowingly created the best kitchen sponge on the market. "I have seen people come off of the set of Shark Tank in tears...if you go in unprepared, you WILL get eaten alive."  ~ Aaron Krause Aaron is a seasoned inventor and he knows his stuff.  This podcast is JAM PACKED with good info. One thing that was hard for me to believe is that he didn't expect Lori to be the Shark Tank much less jump all over his product.   It's crazy to hear what he and Lori have been up to since they shook hands on their deal and what the future holds for Scrub Daddy. (Crazy Story, seriously) His phone rang about 20 times during our chat...it was like the chirping of a smoke detector. (Cha-Ching) How Aaron's path began at a young age washing cars, then detailing them, then ruining the paint job on them... Why the product sat (FINISHED) on a shelf for over 3 years nearly unchanged from the current Scrub Daddy. Why you need to blind field test any product you develop. Retail can be a wall that is almost impossible to break through. (Plus info on how the retail brokerage works) Aaron breaks down the process of getting on QVC (Its much more difficult and tedious than you would expect...interesting story)  I have even more respect for Lori after reading this. Why you should be the BEST SALESPERSON for your product. Why Aaron's style initially caused rifts at QVC and his co-hostesses. Why QVC turns almost everyone down at the gate. Aaron prepared to go on Shark Tank for 6 months and white boarded every question, scenario, and possible outcome he could think of.  How did his predictions compare to the end result?  (And the ONE question he wasn't ready for...) Aaron is launching a new product as we speak and its going to be on QVC very soon...What is it? Why did Mark Cuban bail on the Scrub Daddy even though Aaron had a riposte for every concern he raised? Mr. Wonderful's reaction to being sent out of the negotiation.  (*crickets*) What Aaron has to say about Lori............................................................(Translation= He goes on for a while on how amazing Lori is, a beaming endorsement) Did Lori keep her promise to make Aaron a millionaire within a year?? Plus a whole lot more... Advice from Aaron for entrepreneurs who haven't made it over the hump just yet: (He had ALOT to share on this topic...pay attention!) Look for anything similar to your idea and find out who makes it, what it does, how you can improve it, etc. Evaluate size of market, Do your homework, and get a lawyer (If it involves patents) Do not go to invention submission services companies! Planning your exit strategy. Flow with the punches!  (They will come) Books Aaron recommends for Entrepreneurs: Aaron studied psychology in college and gets sleepy/bored reading books that don't really interest him.  He really enjoys reading about the founding fathers.
