The name means "sand headland." Sandnes is part of Rogaland County in Norway. It is both a city and a municipality. It became a municipality separate from Hoyland in 1860, and in 1965 Hoyland, Hole, and Hetland all merged with Sandnes. Sandnes is located about nine miles south of the city of Stavanger, with which it forms a conurbation. There are beaches along the west coast, and a few small peaks inland. For the most part, though, the region is very flat. Sandnes is known as the bicycle city of Norway because bicycle manufacturer Den Beste Sykkel was located there for many years. There are many bicycle routes, and the city offers a public bicycle rental program. The area is also home to many retail shops that serve the surrounding communities. In the past, Sandnes was also known as Norway's pottery town. There was a large ceramics industry there because of the significant quantity of clay in the land. The coat of arms displays a ceramic cuckoo bird. The Sandnes cuckoo is a flute that potters made to advertise their products. Currently, the biggest industry is oil exploration in the North Sea. There are many successful IT companies as well. Sandnes was chosen to be a part of the World Health Organization's network of Healthy Cities.
