Why women and girls are vulnerable during emergencies and times of conflict

Summary: During and after emergencies, such as conflicts and natural disasters, women and girls are at the most risk of abuse. Lack of protection and provision for their needs leaves them vulnerable to sexual exploitation, violence, mental and physical illness and death. This week, the government’s Department for International Development (DFID) has organised a high-level event to ensure that the prevention of, and response to, violence against women and girls is prioritised in emergency situations.
