He was his parents’ first son, and he had eight older sisters. His father was a very famous oud player, so he taught Riyad how to play and sing. His father often took him to concerts and later set him up with a private instructor. He was known to skip school just so he could see others play the oud. When his fame became widespread, he was called “the Canary of Mansoura.” Riyad met the legendary singer Oum Kalthoum in 1922 and wrote his first song six years later. Then he moved to Cairo and became an oud instructor at a school for musicians. He went on to become the arts director at the school and began to record his own songs, singing and playing the oud. By 1935 he was at the forefront of Egyptian music, and he wrote one of his most famous songs for the movie Take Me to Your City, My Love. His music was a combination of several styles that went along with several popular dances of the day, including the Tango, the Rumba, and the Bolero Waltz. In addition to the oud, he also played accordion, mandolin, and piano. He is known in Egyptian history as bringing new life into traditional Egyptian music styles.
