Summary: The 88 countries that make up the International Whaling Commission (IWC) are meeting this week to decide whether or not to resume commercial whaling, which has been banned for 25 years. The draft plan under discussion would allow certain countries to hunt whales commercially for 10 years – including in Antarctic waters. Could this deal bring the IWC more power over whaling countries and lead to a reduction in the overall number of whales killed, or could it become open to abuse and spark more demand for whale products?
