EPISODE 312 - The Candyman Series

Horroretc Podcast show

Summary: Candyman... Candyman... Candyman... ah, screw it. This week we take a look at another icon of horror, Tony Todd's Candyman and the three films of the franchise. It was a beautiful summer day so we set up the podcast on a local patio to chat horror, continuing the string of episodes recorded on-site. Candyman was based on a Clive Barker short story and the unique edge of his style made it through to the 1992 classic. There was much discussion over the smothering atmosphere, the imposing presence (both physical and audible) of the legendary figure, the bizarre and unexplained elements of the myth, the paced and mature approach taken in approaching the material, the above par performances and a lot more. Candyman at its core is rife with deep themes from tragic love affairs to racism, hatred and vengeance. Then there came the sequels. So Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Day of the Dead (1999) fell well short of the original but we share our thoughts on those as well. Bookending the episode are brief discussions of the character profile of Daniel Lutz, My Amityville Haunting and Neill Blomkamp's sophomore film Elysium. We received a last minute voicemail from a friend of the show calling in with a field report from Fantasia Film Festival that was just too good to exclude. Apologies for the blunt addition at the end of the episode but thanks so much for the awesome rundown of the many great genre offerings to look forward to.
