When my kids were young, I wanted to give ‘em stuff. I wanted to provide for them and outdo what my parents had done for me. I kept thinkin’ it would make me a better parent. But what I thought I was doing for my kids… I was actually doing for myself! I found personal value when my children felt dependent on me. Somewhere along the line, we’ve gotta change our approach. We need to quit providing everything … and help our kids provide for themselves. Even though it feels unnatural at times, don’t let your own needs overshadow what your teen truly needs.
