He also mentions that wether your training for a marathon or just working out on a normal schedule, you can be working out too much and lessen your training ability. Working out too much and limiting your calories primes your body to gain weight. So when you increase your caloric intake you will end up gaining weight, wether or not you are working out. Your body feels like it is being "starved" and as soon as you start consuming more food, your body puts the extra calories directly to fat storage.
