The Tamil version itself was inspired by Christopher Nolan's film Memento. The Hindi version was written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss, who created the Tamil Ghajini. After turning down an offer for a Telugu language remake of his hit movie, he chose to produce a Hindi version after being approached by Aamir Khan. It stars Aamir Khan in the lead as a businessman, Sanjay Singhania, who suffers from short term memory loss, or anterograde amnesia. His condition is being studied by a medical student, Sunita, played by Jiah Khan. Sunita's curiosity is piqued after she finds out that Sanjay's case is classified due to an ongoing police investigation. The movie is played out through Sunita's investigation, flashbacks, and present-day scenes of Sanjay's. It turns out that Sanjay developed his anterograde amnesia after a violent incident that left his girlfriend brutally murdered. He loses his memory every fifteen minutes and relies on body tattoos, Polaroid pictures, and journals to keep track of his memories. After the murder, Sanjay makes it his life quest to hunt down and kill his girlfriend's murderer, and in his vengeful swath his body count begins to pile up. On the run from the police and labeled a serial killer, Sanjay finds an unlikely ally in Sunita once she discovers the true story behind the girlfriend's murder. Ghajini is the name of a prominent community member who Sanjay believes is responsible for the murder of Kalpana, his girlfriend.
