We were not too concerned in looking like bodybuilders, but adults lose over half a pound of muscle every year as they age, so just maintaining your muscles takes work! We cover some basic misconceptions of resistance training, a talk about a very simple program to get started. We had a great comment on the blog from a dieter who lost weight on a carbohydrate reduced diet and started gaining the weight back when she started eating almonds. Jeff really got "his geek on" this week and searched through the published medical literature and found a study on The South Beach Diet. All of the nutrition and health facts from the book were examined individually to see if they had a scientific basis in the published peer-reviewed medical journals. The results were very surprising. His second article dealt with "negative calorie" foods. Yes, there are foods out there that take more calories to chew and digest than they actually have in them. Russ found an excellent study that showed exercise was just as effective as a common depression drug. His second article dealt with a list of common foods that are thought to be healthy, but turn out to be just the opposite.
