The Yukon has a large bear population compared to most places down south. As towns increase in size, so do the number of interactions between humans and bears. In 2012, 17 bears were relocated, 16 bears had to be shot by conservation officers because they posed a safety risk, and five additional bears were killed by private citizens in defense of life and/or property. One group, called Wild Wise, is on a mission to prevent deadly bear and human interactions. I speak with Nicole Tattam to find out more about their pilot project and what it means for the bear population in the Whitehorse area. Also on this episode... It was there that Ruth Borgfjord met the love of her life, a Canadian boy, and together they moved to the Yukon. They got good paying, secure government jobs, bought a house, a car. But for Ruth it wasn’t enough. Her soul needed a creative outlet. A recurring nightmare inspired her to quit her job and take a leap of faith that the Yukon would provide what she needed.
