The life God wants for us involves developing relationships with those around us. The first and most foundational relationship appears to be the one we have with our parents. What is God’s plan for freedom and a life of peace and joy? It all begins with a choice to honor our parents.

What exactly is the deal with the Sabbath? Is God throwing roadblocks in our way to keep us from offending Him and His rules? Or is it possible that He has another motivation that is born of love?

The God who created us is the God who knows us best. And God knows that we have limitations that require us to slow down or stop from time to time. But relax; the God who created us has no such limitations. All He asks of us is that we learn to trust Him.

For hundreds of years, followers of Christ have used His name to support their causes that were not aligned at all with the purposes of Christ. When this happens it has the potential to inflict major damage on innocent people. So, we need to take a hard look at the use of God’s name and see when it is appropriate.

God’s loving approach to us continues as He reveals the intrinsic danger of misunderstanding who He is and why he needs to be seen as ultra-important. When we fail to see God for who He truly is we abuse His very name and bring dishonor to the One we claim to love.

Rather than a mean-spirited attempt to restrict our freedom, God’s command regarding idols is a loving attempt to communicate the emptiness He has built-in to any object, person, or idea that would seek to remove Him from His rightful place of centrality. It’s not that God is narrow-minded; it’s that He’s loving!

The second command is intended to bless the follower of God by warning him about the incredible danger of seeking to find solace, meaning, strength, or joy in any source other than God the Father. God loves us so much that He warns us not to eat fruit that will leave us sick to our stomach.
