In asking for information, the interviewer should not only look into what the patient is saying but also on the non-verbal cues and the cohesion of ideas and derive their assessment from that. The provider should also be aware that not all alterations in behavior are from psychiatric causes. They should also consider and assess for low blood sugar, lack of oxygen, head trauma, extreme temperatures and substance use.For both behavioral and psychiatric patients, emergency responder and patient safety should always be first on the list. Though not all behavioral patients may be a threat, it will never hurt to always be careful.
