Before hypertension reaches its complications, patients with hypertension are given medications to be taken everyday to maintain their blood pressure at normal. There are different antihypertensives given to individual patients. Though these all work to lower the blood pressure, it differs in the mechanism in which they work. The types of antihypertensives include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, adrenergic modifiers, Angiotensin II receptor blockers and other combination medications. It is important for EMS providers to be knowledgeable of these medications to be able to provide correct information for patients with queries or for those who need further understanding of their medication.
