Episode 005 – Practical Effects Masterpieces

Planet Macabre show

Summary: On this show the hosts dive into horror movies focusing on the use of practical effects. HellHunter chose the theme and he demands more horror films use these type of effects over CGI that is so common today. The horror movies rated with detailed effects analysis this episode begins with Alien, the 1979 Ridley Scott classic starring Sigourney Weaver and Tom Skerritt. Next is An American Werewolf In London which has the greatest man-to-wolf transformation ever filmed. A clip of that  can be viewed on YouTube. Third is The Thing starring Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley, and was directed by the famous John Carpenter whereas this is arguably his best work. Lastly is The Fly and The Fly 2 which is disagreed upon across the board. GregaMortis and Dr. Shock provided some extra links this episode during their segments including After Dark Films previously known as the catchy title “8 Films To Die For”, article at The Boston Phoenix about VHS tapes making a comeback and Jason at Considering The Sequels Podcast.
