Cult Marketing 101

Weirdly Human Podcast show

Summary:
In this episode, Candace FINALLY gets us talking about CULTS! When we were originally discussing starting a podcast, Candace pitched the idea of naming the show "My Favorite Cult". For obvious copyright infringement reasons related to another wildly popular podcast, we wisely chose to take this show in a different direction. (But lets just be honest here, we love you Karen & Georgia and "My Favorite Murder" is FABULOUS)

To bring you this episode, we did a little digging around and spent some solid screen time collecting information about a cult that gained notoriety in the late 1990's called Heaven's Gate. This group certainly had some wacky ideas, but they didn't exactly follow the "How to Start a Cult" playbook. Things predictably go off the rails for these people. As often happens with cults, when confronted with reason, the followers double down on their belief system. Surely, ridding oneself of all of the things that make you human is the ticket to a ride on a spaceship! We started this episode with Heaven's Gate, but we can't help ourselves from pulling in information about Scientology. The similarities are just too enticing!

Somehow, after doing a minimal Google search, and watching a few documentaries, Candace thinks she can start her own cult. Maybe she's right. Listen in to find out . . .

Would you be interested enough to attend?

Watch the documentary that inspired this episode here:

Read about the Hale-Bopp Comet photo fraud here

And here's a fun one to watch about Scientology click here
