I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. In this week’s EMS news items I follow up on last week’s special tip segment on sepsis assessment with a look at the actual Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) article on the topic. You should check it out, too, and I’ll have a link in the show notes for it.
Then in the tip segment this week, I have two of the EMS10 Innovator awardees on for interviews from the Physio-Control booth at EMS Today 2016. Check out what Shaughn Maxwell is doing for community paramedicine in Washington State, and what Nnamdi Nwauwa is doing for EMS in the country of Nigeria. All of that is coming up later in the show after the news.
News:
New Sepsis Assessment Guidelines Posted
Mental Health Calls With EMS in Mesa Arizona
PTSD Claims for Responders Approved in Canada
—
EMS Tip of the Week: EMS 10 Innovators Shaughn Maxwell and Nmandi Nwauwa
Thanks to Physio-Control’s sponsorship of our coverage at EMS Today, I was able to interview Washington State paramedic Shaughn Maxwell won a second EMS 10 Innovator award this year for his innovation in changing state laws to allow EMS providers to give care in the home without requiring transport to the hospital. Shaughn compiled and coordinated a multi-disciplinary coalition from across the state for a change in laws to allow community paramedicine. Check out this first interview segment of the week with Shaughn and his medical director.
Next up this week on the show is another EMS10 innovator awardee from EMS Today 2016. Nnamdi Nwauwa innovated EMS care by implementing programs to bring paramedic training to the country of Nigeria for the first time. He chats with Jamie Davis, the Podmedic about the challenges faced in his country including the lack of Good Samaritan Laws to assist in getting bystanders to provide basic care or even call emergency services in the first place.
