We have a major challenge from market where consumers opt for cheap replicas, artifically dyed , screen printed products of Ajrakh, and even Tangaliya. To top it up, our own community sometimes gets in cut-throat competition and steals our designs and sells it at much cheaper rates"

Khatri Abdul Jabar Mahmed , 9th generation Ajrakh Handblock Printing Master Artisan, Sureshkumar Dhaiyda , Tangaliya weaver from Vankar family of Adhoi and Naresh Khengar , The Indigo Man & Weaver from Bhujodi threw light on their personal stories while sharing very candidly what are the issues that bother them.

What can you do as a consumer?

Be aware and Buy from right sources, if possible directly from artisans and weavers.

"Look harder. Try to find original works and you will spot good designers " says Shounak on debates on plagiarism and the role of stylist in dressing celebrity. 

On 45th Episode of CAC Live, Shounak Amonkar and Pranay Jaitly, Co-founders - Who Wore What When, celebrity stylists and creative artists spoke about how a chance encounter led them to styling Vidya Balan, how they went about starting their career in styling in India after Milan and how they totally ensorse local labels.

"Keep asking questions before you buy"

Ask the brands - who made my clothes, where is this weave from, which craft cluster do you work with and so on. If the brand answers, great. If not, you know your answer" shares Devyani Kapoor, Founder & Curator - Shuffling Suitcases on what should a mindful consumer do before making any purchase.

Conversation with Khatri Adil Mustak (Bandhani artisan), Khatri Zakiya Adil (Bandhani artisan), Khalid Usman Khatri (Ajrakh artisan), Pachan Premji Siju (Weaver) and Prakash Naranbhai Siju ( Weaver) on why is design education important and how has it helped them change their lives. Few of them used to do job-work earlier and struggled with making ends meet. Its their true story - wherein education helped them see light at the end of the tunnel.

"Our approach towards designing a product has changed. We now use one idea of design and create about 10 different product, each very different from the other. This has happened because of the exposure we got while learning the basics of colour, design and themes at Somaiya Kala Vidya" shared all the artisans unanimously.

All five of these artisans have earned accolades for their designs and work. What keeps them going is their passioon to create something new and challenging every single time.

"Customers want something new every time. We want to cater to the changing demands of consumers and offer a product that is not just modern but also is true to our heritage" shared Zakiya Adil Khatri, a bandhani artisan.

In the current times when the riding slogan is “Vocal for Local”, we as consumers need to educate ourselves on the back-story of making of each craft to appreciate the skill, time and talent. Only then, will we be able to truly appreciate the price and value of the product.

We need to take pride in what we wear. Until we are proud of our heritage, there wont be much change visible. As consumers, all of us have the power to bring about change in crafts and handloom sector" shares Yuvrani Meenal Kumari Singhdeo of Dhenkanal as we spoke to her on Royalty, Textiles, Covid and Craft Diaries with her.

A lot of her time is dedicated to the upliftment and welfare of the artisans. Realising the negative effects of the pandemic on the crafts persons and with support from the online community, she has been able to extend a helping hand to over 700 families.

"One of the tales that touched my heart was the story of ICU - name given to a child who was born in intensive care unit. This grandchild of wood-carvers was struggling to walk. I felt, it was Downs syndrome but tests had to be done. He wasnt taken to doctor for check-up because it would cost a lot of money. So we took him to a small hospital and got things going for him", adds Meenal on various interactions that she had during her pandemic visits to various villages around Dhenkanal.
