Emmanuel Clase CLE RP
Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Locks down eighth save
23m agoClase earned the save Thursday against the Red Sox, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
It's the fifth straight scoreless outing from Clase -- he's allowed just one hit while striking out eight in his last five innings. Overall, the right-hander is 8-for-10 in save chances this year with a stellar 0.69 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 14:1 K:BB over 13 innings.
-
Triston McKenzie CLE SP
Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Goes four innings vs. Red Sox
27m agoMcKenzie did not factor into the decision Thursday against Boston, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out seven.
McKenzie had to deal with traffic throughout Thursday's outing, though he was ultimately able to mitigate the damage thanks to a season-high seven strikeouts. He'd fail to qualify for a win, however, only making it through four innings after throwing 75 pitches, as Cleveland continues to monitor the 26-year-old's workload after he made just four starts in an injury-plagued 2023 campaign. Overall, McKenzie is 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 18:17 K:BB through four starts (22 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Astros in his next start Wednesday.
-
Chase Anderson BOS RP
Red Sox's Chase Anderson: Struggles in first start
35m agoAnderson (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Guardians, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over 1.2 innings. He didn't record a strikeout.
After working his way out of trouble in the first inning, Anderson allowed a solo home run to Will Brennan in the second before Jose Ramirez launched a grand slam with two outs in the frame. The 36-year-old Anderson opened the year in Boston's bullpen, though he was thrust back into the rotation with injuries to Brayan Bello (lat), Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Garrett Whitlock (oblique). While Thursday's outing certainly wasn't encouraging, the Red Sox may need Anderson to make at least one more start until other starters are healthy. He's currently slated for a home matchup Wednesday against the Giants.
-
Jose Ramirez CLE 3B
Guardians' Jose Ramirez: Powers Cleveland to win
45m agoRamirez went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a stolen base and an additional run scored in Thursday's 6-4 win over the Red Sox.
Ramirez extended the Guardians' lead to 5-0 in the second inning, blasting a two-out grand slam on the 10th pitch of the at-bat from Chase Anderson. While it'd been a slow start to the year by Ramirez's standards, he now has six extra-base hits, including three home runs, and three stolen bases in his last 10 contests. The veteran third-baseman is now slashing .260/.271/.471 with five home runs, 23 RBI and 18 runs scored across 107 plate appearances this season.
-
James Paxton LAD SP
Dodgers' James Paxton: Next start will be Monday
1h agoDodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that Paxton's next start will be at Arizona on Monday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Paxton would be on regular rest Sunday after he started Tuesday's game against the Nationals, but the Dodgers will go with a bullpen game Sunday in Toronto and give Paxton an extra day of rest. The southpaw has managed a 2.61 ERA but a 1.55 WHIP and 11:17 K:BB through 20.2 innings this season.
-
Nick Martinez CIN SP
Reds' Nick Martinez: Gives up five in loss
1h agoMartinez (0-1) took the loss against the Phillies on Thursday, allowing five runs on 11 hits over six innings. He struck out three.
Four of the runs against Martinez came in the third inning, including two on a Bryce Harper home run. After starting the season in the Reds' rotation, Martinez found more success when shifted back to the bullpen, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings in a pair of long-relief appearances. Still, he'll likely make one more start, currently scheduled for Tuesday in San Diego against his former team, with Frankie Montas (forearm) on the IL. The 33-year-old Martinez now sports a 5.48 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB across 23 innings this year.
-
Riley Adams WAS C
Nationals' Riley Adams: Set to lose work with Ruiz back
3h agoAdams is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers.
With Keibert Ruiz (illness) returning from the 10-day injured list Thursday and starting behind the plate in his first game back, Adams' time as the Nationals' No. 1 backstop appears to have ended. He had started in 10 of the Nationals' 11 games while Ruiz was out, going 8-for-33 (.242 average) with four extra-base hits (one home run, three doubles), three runs and two RBI.
-
Austin Barnes LAD C
Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Draws starting nod Thursday
3h agoBarnes will start at catcher and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Nationals.
Barnes will pick up his sixth start of the season while top backstop Will Smith gets a breather as the Dodgers and Nationals close their series with a day game after a night game. Over 19 plate appearances to date, Barnes has batted .250 with no extra-base hits, one RBI and one run.
-
Will Smith LAD C
Dodgers' Will Smith: Receives rest day
3h agoSmith is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals.
Smith will get a breather for the day game after he pounded out four hits, scored twice and drove in a run in Wednesday night's 11-2 win. Austin Barnes will fill in for Smith behind the plate.
-
Yan Gomes CHC C
Cubs' Yan Gomes: Losing work to Amaya
4h agoGomes is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros.
Gomes is on the bench for the seventh time in 10 games and appears to have moved into the No. 2 catcher role behind youngster Miguel Amaya, who draws another start Thursday. The 36-year-old is a trusted game caller behind the plate but has taken a big step back with the bat in 2024, posting a .486 OPS while striking out at a career-worst 35.1 percent rate through 37 plate appearances.
-
Cal Raleigh SEA C
Mariners' Cal Raleigh: Back in action Thursday
5h agoRaleigh (mouth) will start at catcher and bat third in Thursday's game versus the Rangers.
Raleigh missed Wednesday's 5-1 loss following a dental procedure, but he'll be back in action for Thursday's series finale. The switch-hitting catcher enters play Thursday having slugged home runs in four of his last five games.
-
Danny Jansen TOR C
Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Gets rest Thursday
5h agoJansen is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals.
Jansen will get a breather for the day game after he caught eight innings of Wednesday's 3-2 loss while going 1-for-3 with a walk. Alejandro Kirk gets the nod behind the dish for Toronto in the series finale in Kansas City.
-
Bryce Harper PHI 1B
Phillies' Bryce Harper: Homers in return
1h agoHarper went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk in Thursday's 5-0 win over Cincinnati.
After missing Philadelphia's last three games while on the paternity list, Harper returned with a bang Thursday, launching a two-run homer off Nick Martinez to extend the Phillies lead to 4-0 in the third inning. After a slow start to the year, Harper's starting to turn it around at the plate -- he's hit safely in his last seven games, going 10-for-24 with two home runs and nine RBI in that span. He's boosted his slash line to .256/.347/.488 with five homers and 16 RBI across 22 games this season.
-
Ryan Noda OAK 1B
Athletics' Ryan Noda: Sitting against lefty
2h agoNoda isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.
Left-hander Nestor Cortes will start on the mound for New York, forcing the lefty-hitting Noda to start Thursday's contest in the dugout. While he sits, Abraham Toro will start at first base with Max Schuemann and Darell Hernaiz covering second and third.
-
Trey Cabbage HOU 1B
Astros' Trey Cabbage: Will serve as 27th man
3h agoThe Astros will add Cabbage to their roster for their upcoming series against the Rockies in Mexico City, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
The Astros are permitted to add an additional position player to their roster for their two-game series in Mexico City, so they'll bring up Cabbage to provide additional depth at first base and in the outfield. The 26-year-old has spent all season at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he's slashed .271/.440/.486 with three homers and nine RBI.
-
Jose Abreu HOU 1B
Astros' Jose Abreu: Hits bench again Thursday
4h agoAbreu is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.
Abreu is on the bench for the third time in four games, with Jon Singleton getting the nod at first base in his place. It's clear at this point that Abreu's standing atop the depth chart is on thin ice, as the 37-year-old has followed up a disappointing 2023 campaign with an even more disastrous start to the 2024 season, as he's slashing .065/.132/.081 with a career-worst 25 percent strikeout rate across 68 plate appearances. First base/outfield prospect Joey Loperfido has gotten off to a hot start to the season at Triple-A Sugar Land and could soon be summoned to the big leagues if the Astros aren't confident in Abreu's ability to stage a turnaround and/or if Singleton proves to be a poor replacement for Abreu.
-
Anthony Rizzo NYY 1B
Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Goes yard again Wednesday
6h agoRizzo went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 7-3 win over the Yankees.
The 34-year-old first baseman appears to be heating up. Rizzo has gone yard in back-to-back games after managing only one homer in his first 23 contests this season. His .242/.314/.358 slash line and 11 RBI remain below expectations, but after a tough, concussion-marred 2023 campaign, Rizzo's beginning to look more like the player who slugged 32 homers in 2022.
-
Kody Clemens PHI 1B
Phillies' Kody Clemens: Sent back to minors
7h agoThe Phillies optioned Clemens to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday.
He was up with the big club for three games while Bryce Harper was on paternity leave, but he'll now head back to Lehigh Valley as Harper rejoins the club ahead of Thursday's game in Cincinnati. Clemens went 2-for-4 with a home run in his lone start this week.
-
David Fletcher ATL 2B
Braves' David Fletcher: Outrighted to Triple-A
2h agoFletcher was sent outright to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.
Fletcher appeared in five games for Atlanta after being selected from Triple-A on April 16, going 2-for-8 with two RBI. He will remain in the organization as he returns to the minors, though he no longer holds a spot on the 40-man roster. No corresponding move was announced alongside Fletcher's demotion, which may point toward a potential return from the IL for Ozzie Albies (toe) before Friday's game against Cleveland.
-
Zack Gelof OAK 2B
Athletics' Zack Gelof: Placed on injured list
3h agoThe Athletics placed Gelof on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a strained left oblique.
Gelof's injury caused him to be a late scratch from Oakland's lineup ahead of Wednesday's game, and it will now officially cost him at least another week and a half. The 24-year-old second baseman hadn't missed a start prior to Wednesday, though he's failed to make the most of his playing time, slashing just .196/.260/.337 with seven RBI across his first 101 plate appearances. Darell Hernaiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.
-
Gavin Lux LAD 2B
Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Sits against lefty
3h agoLux is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals.
With the Dodgers and Nationals concluding their series with a day game after a night game and with southpaw MacKenzie Gore on the bump for Washington, Lux is one of three lefty-hitting regulars who will get the afternoon off. Lux will be joined on the bench by Max Muncy and James Outman.
-
Cavan Biggio TOR 2B
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Sits against southpaw
5h agoBiggio is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals.
With the Blue Jays and Royals concluding their series with a day game after a night game and with a southpaw (Cole Ragans) on the hill for Kansas City, the lefty-hitting Biggio will get the afternoon off. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will step in for Biggio at the keystone.
-
Enmanuel Valdez BOS 2B
Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Out of Thursday's lineup
6h agoValdez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game in Cleveland.
Valdez is getting a routine day off after starting at second base in each of the Red Sox's previous nine contests. David Hamilton will handle the keystone Thursday.
-
Curtis Mead TB 2B
Rays' Curtis Mead: Swats timely first homer
7h agoMead went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Tigers.
The 23-year-old took Will Vest deep in the sixth inning to break open a 5-5 tie. It was Mead's first homer, and first extra-base hit, of the season, but he could be running out of time to solidify his spot in the lineup with Brandon Lowe (oblique) and Jonathan Aranda (finger) on track to return in early May. Over the last 12 games, Mead is batting just .216 (8-for-37) with a 1:10 BB:K.
-
Jose Ramirez CLE 3B
-
Jon Berti NYY 3B
Yankees' Jon Berti: Nearing rehab assignment
1h agoYankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Berti (groin) could begin a rehab assignment Sunday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Berti is nearly two weeks removed from suffering a left groin strain and is almost ready to test things out in game action. The utility player shouldn't need too many rehab games before rejoining the Yanks.
-
Nick Senzel WAS 3B
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Scratched Thursday
2h agoSenzel was scratched from Washington's lineup ahead of Thursday's game versus the Dodgers due to a stomach illness.
Ildemaro Vargas will cover third base instead and bat eighth while Senzel is under the weather. The 28-year-old has hit safely in three of his last four games, homering twice.
-
Darell Hernaiz OAK 3B
Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Back in big leagues
3h agoThe Athletics recalled Hernaiz from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
He's taking the roster spot vacated by Zack Gelof (oblique). Hernaiz will be a candidate for reps at second base in Gelof's absence and he can handle shortstop and third base, as well. It's unclear how high he'll be in the pecking order, however, after he managed just a .103/.156/.103 batting line before being sent down.
-
Max Muncy LAD 3B
Dodgers' Max Muncy: Takes seat against southpaw
3h agoMuncy is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals.
With the Dodgers and Nationals concluding their series with a day game after a night game and with southpaw MacKenzie Gore on the bump for Washington, Muncy is one of three lefty-hitting regulars who will get the afternoon off. Muncy will be joined on the bench by Gavin Lux and James Outman.
-
Trey Lipscomb WAS 3B
Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Sitting Thursday
4h agoLipscomb isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Lipscomb will take a seat after going 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored during Wednesday's 11-2 loss. Joey Meneses will start at first base in his absence, while Jesse Winker serves as Washington's designated hitter.
-
Bobby Witt KC SS
Royals' Bobby Witt: Swipes two bags in win
4h agoWitt went 1-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays.
Witt's RBI single in the fifth inning produced the decisive run in the contest. He's gone 7-for-20 (.350) with three RBI and three steals over his last five games. He continues to hit well out of the No. 2 spot in the order, slashing .317/.367/.574 with four home runs, seven steals, 11 RBI, 21 runs scored, eight doubles and three triples over 109 plate appearances. Witt's success has been a driving force behind the Royals' impressive 15-10 start to the campaign.
-
J.P. Crawford SEA SS
Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Headed to IL with oblique strain
5h agoThe Mariners placed Crawford on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 right oblique strain.
Crawford was a late scratch from the lineup ahead of Wednesday's loss to the Rangers, and subsequent testing revealed that he was dealing with an oblique strain. Grade 1 is the least severe type of strain, so it's possible that Crawford's stint on the IL won't be a lengthy one. Dylan Moore will make his second straight start at shortstop Thursday and is expected to serve as the primary replacement for Crawford during his upcoming absence.
-
Tyler Fitzgerald SF SS
Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Swats first homer
5h agoFitzgerald went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-2 loss to the Mets.
Fitzgerald got the Giants on the board in the seventh inning. He has often found his way into the lineup versus southpaws while also serving as a right-handed bench bat. The utility man is batting .269 with a homer, four stolen bases, three RBI, five runs scored, two doubles and a triple over 28 plate appearances.
-
J.P. Crawford SEA SS
Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Held out again Thursday
5h agoCrawford (oblique) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Rangers.
Crawford had to be scratched from Wednesday's lineup with right oblique soreness and now will miss a second straight start. Infielder Leonardo Rivas has joined the Mariners on their taxi squad, per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM, so it would appear possible that Crawford will require a stint on the injured list. Dylan Moore is handling shortstop Thursday.
-
Corey Seager TEX SS
Rangers' Corey Seager: Cleared for DH duties Thursday
5h agoSeager (shin) will serve as the Rangers' designated hitter and No. 2 batter in Thursday's game against the Mariners.
Seager was removed late in Wednesday's 5-1 win over Seattle after getting hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. According to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, manager Bruce Bochy said after the contest that Seager's left shin "swelled up pretty good," but the 29-year-old evidently feels good enough Thursday to give it a go, albeit in a non-defensive role. Josh Smith will take over Seager's usual duties at shortstop.
-
Vaughn Grissom BOS SS
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Activation this weekend unlikely
6h agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Grissom (hamstring) is getting close to being activated but is unlikely to be back this weekend, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Grissom has played six rehab games with Triple-A Worcester, and he was at second base for the last three of them. The Red Sox have an off day Monday before beginning a series with the Giants at home Tuesday, and that could be the day the club is targeting for Grissom's season and team debut.
-
Stone Garrett WAS LF
Nationals' Stone Garrett: Activated and optioned
1h agoThe Nationals activated Garrett (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Garrett had just had his rehab assignment moved from Double-A Harrisburg to Rochester and the Nats have elected to keep him there for a while longer. Coming back from reconstructive surgery on his left ankle, Garrett has gone 7-for-31 with a 9:7 K:BB over 40 plate appearances so far on his rehab assignment. The 28-year-old should be back with the Nationals soon enough, particularly with Lane Thomas (knee) not out indefinitely, but the club wants Garrett to sharpen things up a bit more first.
-
Lawrence Butler OAK RF
Athletics' Lawrence Butler: Sits down versus lefty
1h agoButler isn't in Oakland's lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.
The left-handed bat of Butler will step out of the lineup with southpaw Nestor Cortes on the mound for the Yankees. Tyler Nevin will take over in right field, allowing Darell Hernaiz to start at third base and bat ninth.
-
Seth Brown OAK LF
Athletics' Seth Brown: Day off versus southpaw
2h agoBrown isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.
With lefty Nestor Cortes set to start for New York, Brown will retreat to the dugout to begin Thursday's contest. Esteury Ruiz will cover left field instead and bat in the leadoff spot.
-
Jackson Merrill SD CF
Padres' Jackson Merrill: Scratched from lineup Thursday
2h agoMerrill was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game in Colorado due to right groin tightness, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports.
Padres manager Mike Shildt said the move was precautionary and Merrill could have played, so it sounds safe to call the rookie outfielder day-to-day. Jose Azocar will shift over to center field, Tyler Wade will move to left and Eguy Rosario will enter the lineup at third base.
-
James Outman LAD CF
Dodgers' James Outman: Gets Thursday off
3h agoOutman is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals.
With the Dodgers and Nationals concluding their series with a day game after a night game and with southpaw MacKenzie Gore on the bump for Washington, Outman is one of three lefty-hitting regulars who will get the afternoon off. Outman will be joined on the bench by Gavin Lux and Max Muncy.
-
Nolan Jones COL LF
Rockies' Nolan Jones: Still battling back injury
3h agoJones (back) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres.
Jones is on the bench for a second straight game while he tends to a stiff back. With Jones out of the lineup along with Charlie Blackmon and Sean Bouchard, the Rockies will have Jake Cave and Hunter Goodman start in the corner outfield spots.
-
Triston McKenzie CLE SP
-
James Paxton LAD SP
-
Zack Wheeler PHI SP
Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Second straight one-hitter
1h agoWheeler (2-3) earned the win Thursday against the Reds, allowing one hit and four walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out eight.
Wheeler's allowed just one hit in consecutive starts, as he's held opponents scoreless in 13.1 consecutive innings, posting 16 strikeouts in that span. The 33-year-old right-hander has arguably been the top fantasy starting option early in the season -- he lowered his ERA to 1.93 with a 0.88 WHIP and 46:11 K:BB through six starts (37.1 innings). Wheeler will look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively scheduled as a road matchup Tuesday against the Angels.
-
Walker Buehler LAD SP
Dodgers' Walker Buehler: Goes four-plus in rehab start
2h agoBuehler (elbow) was charged with five runs (three earned) over four-plus innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
He permitted seven hits, walked two and struck out five. The line for Buehler wasn't pretty, but keep in mind that the game was pitched at high altitude at Albuquerque, so the results were mostly secondary. Buehler got his pitch count up to 86 and averaged 94.1 mph with his four-seamer, which is down 1.1 mph from what he averaged during the 2022 season prior to Tommy John surgery. It's possible this was Buehler's final rehab start, but that determination hasn't been made yet. He could potentially make his season debut as soon as Tuesday in Arizona.
-
Alek Manoah TOR SP
Blue Jays' Alek Manoah: Likely to make another rehab start
3h agoBlue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Manoah (shoulder) is likely to make another rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Manoah was roughed up for six runs on seven hits and four walks over three innings in his latest start with Buffalo on Wednesday. Three of his four rehab outings have been poor, and overall batters have hit .406/.474/.703 off Manoah. He does not appear close to being ready to help out the major-league club.
-
Emmanuel Clase CLE RP
Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Locks down eighth save
23m agoClase earned the save Thursday against the Red Sox, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
It's the fifth straight scoreless outing from Clase -- he's allowed just one hit while striking out eight in his last five innings. Overall, the right-hander is 8-for-10 in save chances this year with a stellar 0.69 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 14:1 K:BB over 13 innings.
-
Chase Anderson BOS RP
-
Michael Tonkin NYY RP
Yankees' Michael Tonkin: Claimed by Yankees
2h agoThe Yankees claimed Tonkin off waivers from the Mets on Thursday.
After being DFA'd for the third time this month Monday, Tonkin will now move from Queens to the Bronx and nab a spot on a 40-man roster. The 34-year-old right-hander has allowed six earned runs across nine innings between the Twins and Mets this season and will likely be limited to low-leverage situations with the Yankees. McKinley Moore was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
-
McKinley Moore NYY RP
Yankees' McKinley Moore: Designated for assignment
2h agoMoore was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Thursday.
He's losing his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Michael Tonkin, who was claimed off waivers. Moore missed the first couple weeks of this season with a knee injury and since returning has allowed two runs with a 1:6 K:BB over two-thirds of an inning. The 25-year-old has missed a ton of bats in the minors in the past, so even with his current struggles he could receive interest via trade or waivers.
-
Gregory Santos SEA RP
Mariners' Gregory Santos: Shifts to 60-day IL
4h agoThe Mariners transferred Santos (lat) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday.
The transaction was made in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Leonardo Rivas, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Tacoma. Santos is in the midst of a throwing program as he works his way back from a right lat strain, but the Mariners are proceeding conservatively with him. He won't be eligible to make his season debut until late May.
-
John Schreiber KC RP
Royals' John Schreiber: Credited with win
4h agoSchreiber (2-0) pitched a perfect inning and was credited with the win Wednesday over the Blue Jays.
Schreiber was deemed the most effective reliever after Alec Marsh (elbow) exited the contest in the fifth inning and Angel Zerpa struggled in a 1.2-inning assignment. Schreiber has maintained scoreless outings in all but one of his appearances so far, pitching to a 0.75 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB across 12 innings. He's added two wins and seven holds while serving in a setup role. Schreiber doesn't have a clear path to saves with James McArthur emerging as the Royals' closer, but he's very clearly in the late-inning mix.
-
Charlie Blackmon COL DH
Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Resting in day game
3h agoBlackmon is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres.
He'll take a seat while the Padres and Rockies wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. With Blackmon on the bench along with Nolan Jones (back), Jake Cave and Hunter Goodman will occupy the corner-outfield spots, and catcher Elias Diaz will get a day off behind the plate and will serve as the Rockies' designated hitter.

Manny Machado SD DH
Padres' Manny Machado: Not starting Thursday
4h agoMachado (personal) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies.
Since Machado has already spent the maximum three days on the paternity list, he needs to be activated Thursday, but the Padres have yet to officially announce the move. Even if the Padres add Machado back to the 26-man roster Thursday, he'll still be available only as a bench player before likely making his return to the lineup against the Phillies this weekend, when the team returns to San Diego. Jurickson Profar will serve as the Friars' designated hitter Thursday.

Matt Mervis CHC DH
Cubs' Matt Mervis: Not starting Thursday
4h agoMervis is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros.
Following his promotion from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Mervis served as the Cubs' designated hitter in both of the ensuing two games, going 0-for-6 with three strikeouts between those contests. Though he'll retreat to the bench Thursday, the lefty-hitting Mervis will likely see the bulk of the starts at DH against right-handed pitching until the Cubs get Seiya Suzuki (oblique) from the 10-day injured list.

Nelson Velazquez KC DH
Royals' Nelson Velazquez: Heads to bench Thursday
6h agoVelazquez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays.
With the Royals looking to give Vinnie Pasquantino a day out of the field and Salvador Perez a day off behind the plate in the series finale, Velazquez will be a casualty from the Kansas City lineup. Pasquantino will serve as the Royals' designated hitter in Velazquez's stead, while Perez takes over Pasquantino's usual spot at first base.

Masataka Yoshida BOS DH
Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Absent from lineup again
6h agoYoshida is out of the lineup for Thursday's game in Cleveland.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora insisted prior to Wednesday's game against the Guardians that Yoshida was still the team's everyday designated hitter. However, he's now out of the lineup for a third straight contest and for the sixth time in eight games, with all but one of those absences coming versus righties. Rafael Devers will start at DH again Thursday as he comes back from a knee issue, and Yoshida presumably will be back in the lineup once Devers is ready to return to third base. Clearly, the club has little faith in Yoshida's glove, as he's played just one inning in left field this season.

Estevan Florial CLE DH
Guardians' Estevan Florial: Taking seat Thursday
7h agoFlorial is out of the lineup for Thursday's tilt against the Red Sox.
Florial had started four of the previous five games versus right-handers but will take a seat Thursday against righty Chase Anderson. Jose Ramirez will get a day out of the infield and serve as the Guardians' designated hitter Thursday while Florial is on the bench.
